RU6a
Created: 27 Apr 2010 | 34 comments
I was told that SEP 11.0 RU6a was going to be available either today or tomorrow to fix some issues with the SEPM in RU6. Can a Symantec exployee confirm this? If so, what are the fixes in RU6a?

RU6a is coming yes.
It should appear on Fileconnect tomorrow afternoon, PDT.
These will be added to the release notes on Wednesday:
Fix ID: 2020545
Deploying or migrating clients when using multi-byte character group names in the Symantec Endpoint Protection Management console
Symptom: If you create groups with names that use a double-byte character set, you cannot add new RU6 clients to those groups through any form of installation. New clients are automatically placed into the Default group.
Solution: With RU6, clients were incorrectly parsing DBCS characters resulting in a corrupt group name. When registering with the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager using a corrupt group name, clients are placed into the Default group. With this fix, client-side changes were made to correctly parse DBCS group names.
Fix ID: 2022713
Removal of periodic CPU spike when using Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager Java console
Symptom: With RU6, A periodic CPU spike occurs when a user selected the Policies, Clients, or Admin page in the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager Java-based console.
Solution: This issue was caused by a periodic refresh of the Home page to prevent a time-out of the PHP session. The refresh task now refreshes the Reports page, which consumes fewer resources. In addition, you can now configure the refresh time by setting the scm.keepalivescheduleminute value in the conf.properties file.
The version number of the new build will be 11.0.6005.562 and will be labelled Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_11.0.6A_Xplat_EN_DVD.zip
All previous upgrade paths will be supported by this build, including RU6 to RU6a.
RU6 will remain on Fileconnect for now, RU6a will be added to it tomorrow.
For localised builds, RU6a will be the version which is localised.

Thank you for the information
nothing for the console
nothing for the console time-outs that keep closing the console on me, eh?
because if there's supposed to be periodic refreshes to keep the session from timing out, it's not working....... she still times out, and even kicks me back to the home page!

Yes, the client packages have been updated.
The only fix however is for the DBCS characters - if you don't have those in your environment, you shouldn't need to update your clients if you already have some deployed.
AutoUpdate from RU6 to RU6a will of course work, and the delta will be quite small.

Is there any patch available for SEPM RU6 to RU6a - really not interested in downloading the whole ISO again.

Sorry, no. SEPM is not an easy product to patch at the moment, its far easier and safer to ship a new build, since it also includes the new client packages too.
Note that if you are not seeing or wont be affected by either issue, its not a requirement that you must upgrade, we will still support RU6 and you will be able to migrate from it to another build in the future.

Thanks for the prompt reply.
Thanks for the prompt reply. My environment is affected by the timeout issue, so I will patch. We were also about to prepare packages for RU6, so will jump straight to RU6a instead for this patch cycle.

SEPM need to be upgraded before the clients, right?
Did I get it right? I have to upgrade SEPM from RU6 to RU6a because we need the localised clients which will be RU6a, right?
Regardless if we encounter those problems or not...
When will the localised clients be available?
Thanks

Yes, you should ideally upgrade SEPM first.
The localised builds will start to appear in early May - they will all be based off RU6a.

Downloading too. The SEPM console on this new version (RU6) is really sluggish, RU5 was much better. Let's see it now on RU6a
I have to agree with you.
I have to agree with you. Although I've always thought the console was painfully slow (especially for folks in a hurry or who wear 15 different hats and need things fast) but honestly, RU6 was slower, noticably slower, than RU5 ever was even withouth any tweaks.
So there's a disappointment in the console speed- even the web-based console is slow.
Maybe they need to speed up the SQL queries........ ??

Can someone give me a hint when the German releases will be Published? I Have to Plan migrations for a few hundred clients :)
is that release already
is that release already supported by symantec? In case we run into problems while upgrading. Or is RU6a still in a "beta-phase?"
@ Markus G. RU6a is available

RU6a is available for download. This is not a beta version.

Hi, is there are reason why
Hi, is there are reason why Symantec does not digitally sign the patches, or at least provide something like an md5 hash?
If you are a BCS customer,
If you are a BCS customer, you have access to the SymantecPlatinum Site. There you can see the MD5 hash values of the SEP builds.
SEP 11 RU6a
Zip MD5: BA5096E75210C0394B5CA97F68EB4D1E
ISO MD5: AF44022B08C12AB2709C16E5FA9AF188
The reason we were asking is because when I received the installation files for SEP 11 RU6a through our workplace, I first scanned them with McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.7.0i. The following files were identified as being suspicious or trojans:
Furthermore, McAfee doesn't seem to like the following files either, even though they are digitally signed:
Granted, it's not really Symantec's problem that McAfee identifies Symantec's files as suspicious, but since I'm not my organization's IT person, there wasn't an easy way for me to independently verify that these files were not somehow infected or compromised.
Just my two cents to maybe digitally sign software that is distributed as downloads, e.g. a digitally signed self-extracting archive, or publish the digital signatures in a more accesible place.
