  • 1.  Running Deployment Console 6.9 on a Win7 machine through Parallels

I'm hoping someone out there has done this successfully. I'm currently running, or attempting to, run the Deployment Console on a Win 7 machine through Parallels on my MacBook Pro. Parallels version has been updated to the latest version. The problem I'm having is remote control through the console. When attempting to remote control a machine using DS remote control the connection times out and never connects. Is this a video/setting issue or something else entirely? Appreciate any assistance on the matter, thanks!

Windows 7 is not supported for the console.  You can see from this KB that Windows XP is supported, however:

I had a client who tried to get it to work on Parallels, but ended up putting it on a remote virtual system that he remoted into, so I can't comment on what the issue might have been, except to say the networking gets pretty interesting.

What mclemson said is both true and not. Yes, the Windows 7 client is NOT "supported" for DS 6.9 when using the Win32 Console. No, it's wrong that it doesn't work. in fact, it works a dream. Every single member of my IT Department runs Windows 7 x64 systems and happilly runs the Win32 Console. Works perfectly.

It's much like Symantec saying that Notification Server of Helpdesk isn't "supported" on anything newer than IE7, even though we all use IE9 and all is well.

Yes... I have also used a Win32 Console for DS 6.9 from within a Virtual Machine (though mine was VMWare). Worked fine. Here are a couple of things to note:

    1. The virtual machine's networking is important. A lot of VM programs try creating the VM using "NAT" or similar networking settings. I would suggest that you use an "e1000" virtual NIC (if you can specify it) and set it to "Bridged" mode so that it becomes it's own NIC (get's it's own IP address, generates it's own MAC address, etc).

    2. Remote control, and other DS services, fro the server end require a LOT of ports open for both TCP and UDP. If you have installed any firewall or Anti-Virus software on the Mac or PC, you may want to check that the thing can actually talk. Remote control ports (when opening them on the server) are usually TCP 5001 and 5002.

    3. The "Remote Control" is a bit funny when it comes to certain resolutions (higher ones). If you do get a connection, you may be sitting there on a white screen, so remember to lower the color depth if you have issues with that.

I have certainly remote controlled OUT of a VM before (running Windows 7), and have remote controlled a Windows 7 computer WITHINT a VM (Parallels in fact), so it should work just fine.
