SAN best practise
Updated: 22 May 2010 | 1 comment
Hi,
I'm looking to setup BUE on a HP blade system with a MSA 1500 SAN attached. I have a tape library with a fibre card connected into the SAN.
I was wondering how you can configure backupexec so that it uses fibre rather than the LAN to backup hosts?
TIA,
Al

The MSA is not listed in the
The MSA is not listed in the HCL to do an "Offhost," backup, only the EVA's.
Your general backups will go from clients, over the LAN, to your blade server running BE, From there, it can be written to TAPE and/or SAN DISK as a backup target.
If you want other hosts to write directly to the SAN, you need to install BE on those servers, to make it a full media server, also you must have the SSO option, so that the new media server can write to TAPE directly on an unused drive within the library. The two media servers will ultimately share the library using any unused drives as needed when using the SSO option.
Alternatively, you can partition your library and dedicate drives within the library per media server... But SSO is the preferred method IMO.
There is an online portal, save yourself the long hold times. Create ticket online, then call in with ticket # in hand :-) http://mysupport.symantec.com "We backup data to restore, we don't backup data just to back it up."
