  • 1.  SAV 10 Netware 6.5 getting AMS2 to work

    Posted Aug 11, 2009 04:05 PM
I recently replaced our old Netware 5.1 SAV 8.5 server with a Netware 6.5, SAV 10.1.8.8000 one. Things seemed to be working except for AMS2.  In SSC, Server Group, All Tasks, AMS, Configure, the Alert Actions list was empty. The instructions said make sure AMS was installed on the server. To make sure, uninstall from the server then reinstall and make sure the AMS box is checked. During the initial install I kept waiting for an AMS checkbox to appear and none did, only a radio button with REPORTING which I clicked. So I followed the instructions. I Uninstalled the server software and noticed that some of the AMS NLMs were in the list of files being deleted. I installed from my workstation and I saw no AMS checkbox. Now I have a large mess. The SymantecUserGroup on the server is gone. I had been using that to update the Client software when I logged on. I think I have all 60 or so client machines running the later client software so that is not a huge issue, just a symptom. None of the clients show up in SSC. The clients no longer get the virus definition updates from the server. Using my workstation computer as a test bed I copied the GRC.DAT file to the C:\Documents..\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec....\7.5 folder, deleted the virus def db files, rebooted a few times. The GRC.DAT disappeared as expected but no virus def updates. I am now going to uninstall the client software and reinstall. I was logged in as me with admin rights for the server install. I'll try another uninstall and reinstall logged in using the admin account tonight. I might need to make this into 2 discussions.

1.Assuming I ever get this back to where it was last week, how does one get AMS2 to work with a single Netware server and WinXP Home workstations? The new Reporting module apparently doesn't work with Netware or Win XP Home Edition. Since it appears to be 11 times as big, I'm not too dissappointed.

2.How do I get back to where I was last week?

    Thanks for any help,
    Bob

To install AMS, follow the below steps:

Start the deployment of Symantec AntiVirus to the Netware server normally, so that all of the install files are copied to the Netware server.

Once the files have been copied, edit the "vars.ini" file located in the directory: \Rollout\AVServer

In the miscellaneous section of the "vars.ini" change the value of INSTALLAMS=0 to INSTALLAMS=1

After saving the change to the "vars.ini" file run the installer

    VPSTART.NLM /install

Prachand, Well done! I have the install files on my computer's harddrive, and using the Disc2 folders (earlier experiments lead me to believe that installing from Disc1 did not work correctly)  did the modification to the "vars.ini" file you suggested  I paid better attention doing the second uninstall and reinstall and chose to do the server install to the  SERVER_SYS volume (NDS I think) rather than the NetwareServer (bindery I guess). That got back the missing Symantec groups in Netware. The "INSTALLAMS=1" seems to have worked as now the Alert Actions box is populated. Other than having the SSC stop with a "Sorry for the inconvenience" message 5 times so far, we are almost back to where we were plus the AMS2 is working.

I have not been able to get the clients to show up other than by uninstalling and reinstalling the client software on my 2 computers. We have about 60. I tried copying the GRC.DAT file from the server to the client and that caused some changes. I used SSC to Enable LiveUpdate button on the client machines and after the GRC.DAT copy and a reboot on my second computer the button enabled but on all the other clients that I didn't copy the GRC.DAT the button is still disabled. Do you know if doing the client uninstall/reinstall is the only way to get the clients back into the server group?
    Thanks for your help,
    Bob

Replace the GRC.dat on the remaining client first and the see if that resolves the issue. Uninstall and Reinstall would be the last step

I modified the login script in Netware and had both the GRC.DAT and the root certificate copy from the server to the workstation and that seemed to work.  Since the average user doesn't have access to the SYS:\SAV folder I copied them to a commonly used read-only public one by hand then had the login script copy them from there

    IF OS = "WINNT" THEN
    #XCOPY L:\DOWNLOAD\GRC.DAT  "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\" /y
     #XCOPY L:\DOWNLOAD\*.servergroupca.cer "C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\pki\roots\" /y
    END

The definitions were retrieved from the server after a reboot. Thanks again for your help. Bob
