    Posted Apr 02, 2013 06:56 AM

    Hi can someone help I looking for a trial version of the Symantec Scan Engine to use with Trustwave's MailMarshal SEG, I have tried looking at the download site as suggested in a few threads but I'm blind or its names something different.

    "You can also download a 30-day trial from our Trialware site.

    http://www.symantec.com/business/products/downloads/index.jsp

    Under the Security tab, you'll find Scan Engine."

    Any help would be gratefully appreciated

    I'm looking at the trialware site but having some difficulty finding it

    https://www.symantec.com/products-solutions/trialware/

    You may want to give support a quick call as they should be able to quickly get you pointed in the right direction

    UPDATE:  Let me start by saying Thanks for all your help so far

    I have download and tested the CS and NAS versions but I cannot seem to get Marshal to detect that the software is installed, but i believe that this is a result of the Protection Engine service fails to start but I only get an error that it took too long to start.

    I sure I have read in one of the Tech articles that the Native protocol option has been removed/retired in Version 7.0, if that is the case how do I get Version 5.2.

    For the time being I have reverted to an earlier snapshot and will install again encase I missed something on the first install.

    Absolutely untrue. As you can see under Configuration -> Protocol, Native is still there.

    Funny I was just going to edit the post to say the same in the Configuration.xml, anyway after the reinstall I still cannot get SYMCScan service to start

    I think I'm having one of those weeks I still cannot get the service to run regardless I have installed Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1, Java RE 7.0 and made the user running the service a local administrator, I still get the error from the service:

    Error 1053, the service did not respond to a star control in a timely fashion."  GRRRR!!!

    The only other relevant info I can find is:

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH167438

    That states “MSVCRT80.DLL and MSVCP80.DLL are required for symcscan.exe to start” I’m Missing MSVCRT80.DLL file but cannot seem to get the C++ 2005 SP1 to install the required file

    I have to be missing something (a few brain cells currently), As I’m only installing a trial would Symantec supply any type of support?

    What I would suggest is to open the command-line on the server and launch the symcscan.exe directly. This will sometimes provide more output on why Scan Engine won't start.

    Hi I have done some further testing today I have attempted to install the software to a clean but patched Server 2008 SP2 and a Server 2008 R2 SP1, neither worked they both had the same problem as I have with the live server, so the issue is I’m missing whatever steps are needed to correctly configure the software once installed or one of the default apps I install as part of the server build are causing the issue.  I thinking it’s me !!

    So I have used the following to install:

    C++ 2005
    C++ 2005 SP1
    Java RE 7.0
    Symentec Protrction Engine

    The install always fails first time at I assume the configuration side of something as there  is a DOS window, as suggested in the error message  I run the installation again (either a repair or a add/remove feature)  and the installation finishes without any issues the second time.

    FYI so starting direct from command line :>SymcScan.exe I get the below as well as ”An Unhandled win32  Exception has occurred in symcscan.exe [2884]”

    Problem signature:

      Problem Event Name:                        BEX

    Are you installing the 64-bit or the 32-bit JRE?

    Are these virtual machines?

    Hi All thanks for your help although I did not get this resolved and have to revert to a different scanner, my first question was answered.

    PS If there are a reason/thinking behind the questions I would like to know :) only because I dont like unsolved issues.

    Are you installing the 64-bit or the 32-bit JRE?

    Are these virtual machines?

    Thanks Simon

    We should work fine on VMWare, but we don't work on VirtualBox. We need only the 32-bit JRE installed. It sounds like your main scanner should work. Without much diagnostics, it's hard to know exactly what is wrong. Have you given this VM enough RAM to operate? Can you post a screenshot of the output when symcscan.exe is run explicitly in a command prompt?
