When I go to run a scan on my Vista machine I get the following error:
"Could not start scan.  Scan engine returned error 0x20000003."

    Symantec 10.2

This is a fresh install on a new system.  Any suggestions?

His error happens in Safe Mode mine occurs in normal mode.  I did try to uninstall and reinstall and I kept getting this error: 'error 1920. service symantec antivirus (symantec antivirus) failed to start.'  I am an Admin on the machine.  I cleaned out the registry and reinstalled norton and I still can't run the scan.

When I go into services to start Symantec Antivirus I get this error:   "Windows could not start the Symantec AntiVirus service on Local Computer.  Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly."

The patch helped the problem with scanning in safe mode.  I still am unable to scan in normal mode.  I tried to reinstall Symantec and now I am getting this error:
Error 1920.Sercive Symantec Antivirus (Symantec AntiVirus) failed to start.  Verify that you have suffcient privileges to start system services.

I am logged on with admin rights.

I take that by the lack of response that either Symantec doesn't care about this or that they are unsure how to fix it.  It is not the same error as the other tech at the University.  We will be having students bringing their Vista machines on campus in 2 weeks and we were just hoping to have a fix for this in case there are other studnets that run into the same problem.  We require Symantec as the anti-virus on campus, how can we do this when it will not install on some machines so we go to Symantec for  help and they blow us off?  There is only so much we can do on our side.

I also got this error message.  When will a patch be available?  Is symantec protecting my computer even without running scans?  Should I try to uninstall and reinstall it?  Should I use window's defender until you have the patch out?

have either of you logged a call about this with our support group?

can you check for the presence of a file called "Program" on the root of your drives?

can you confirm that the file and location the Symantec AntiVirus service points to is correct and exists?

I got to this message board via Google because of the problems I found with the program.  I may be less sophisticated than other participants, so forgive me if I did not understand critical parts of your response.

have either of you logged a call about this with our support group?  What is the phone # to call?

can you check for the presence of a file called "Program" on the root of your drives?  How would I do so?

can you confirm that the file and location the Symantec AntiVirus service points to is correct and exists?  How would I do so?

All I know is that I am getting these error messages when I try to do a scan.  I also got a warning in yellow, indicating that my virus protection is not working.

I would appreciate specific advice on what to do.

Yes, I spent pretty much all day on Friday the 10th on the phone with Syamantec and got absolutely no where.  I ended up having 2 calls seperate call numbers from Symantec.

If you try to reinstall more than likely you will get and error code of 1920. It sounds like we have the same problem exactly!  Does that yellow error that pops up say that Auto protect is diabled?

Yes, the yellow box told me that auto protect is disabled, but the Vista Security center says that it is functioning, so I don't know what to believe.

Mine does the exact same thing.  If you try to start the service you get error 1670 or something like that.

I was not able to install SAVCE_10.2_MP1_Vista_EN_.Zip, (sorry its late and I honestly cant recall the error when installing MR1), However The update SAVCE_SMB_10.2_MP1_Vista_EN.zip Installed correctly. (This was being done on an unmanaged client machine) I also uninstalled MS update KB905866 as a conflict has been suggested in another post. I had been unable to run any kind of scan in Safe Mode or in Normal Mode. Auto Protect seemed to function properly as it caught several infection attempts. After install of the 2nd file mentioned, and a reboot, all is scanning again. CPQ c712nr
I have also seen this in a Toshiba, in the past week, but haven't tried the repair yet on that machine.
I know this is an old topic, and it has been a while since any activity, but it is still very relevant and helpful.

This problem was fixed in Symantec AntiVirus 10.2 MR1. For information on how to obtain the latest build of Symantec AntiVirus, read Obtaining an upgrade or update for Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition or Symantec Client Security.
