  • 1.  SD 7.1 prerequisits and virtual support

    Posted Feb 01, 2011 09:22 AM

I know we have had discussions on at least one of these items since early 2009 about SD7.  And now SD71 is about to be release and I will start all over ;-)

Where it was "mandatory" to have SD7 on a seperated server, will that be different in SD71?

Where SD (and other titles for that matter) was officially not supported to run in a virtual environment, wil it be in 7.1?

Symc response would be nice but other "experiences" or insights are very much welcome

    thx

Since 7.1 is still basically the same thing as 7.0 just with fixes and 'improvements', i cant see the requirements being any less than before.

And while i hate to do the 'it all depends' copout the resources this stuff uses is pretty dependent on your load. This i have experienced first hand with 7.0.x when moving from a smaller test environment to our somewhat large ( but not huge ) production environment

.. as it was pure technical mandatory with v7 to have a dedicated SD server. I sort of have a memory part that tells me that has changed in 7.1.  Result one should be able to install SD71 on the same hardware as SMP71 so they run on one server.  That is a great anhancement for the smaller companies they do not mind putting in more power/resources but do tent to hassitate to buy a second (third as SQL is mostly off-box) server.

Same with virtual.  Larger companies do tent to virtualize almost everything but with Symantec products that was officially not supported...  I have a rememberance that also was going to change in V71

Virtualization is supported in 7.1.  The ITMS Beta Guide from October 2010 says as a bullet point for what's new in ServiceDesk: "ServiceDesk application will be able to run in a virtual environment."

I assume this continues on the history of VMWare ESX, but best effort on Hyper-V and such.

Unless you are TINY you don't want to run it all on one box. Trust me on that.   I tried that in training and it failed miserably. After about 15 users it would break down due to the strain on the server. With a HUGE box you might get further, but then you will run into other fundamental bottlenecks that would bite you.

Yes, the NS will be 64bit so you could now combine that if all it does is licensing ( but if it does ANYTHING else, don't do it or you will regret it ), but i was thinking more of SD/WF/SQL since you didn't really specify.

VM support? Well that is just a company decision not to support it and not a technological reason so i don't see that changing, unless corporate philosophy changes inside Symantec.

Really, if a company cant pony up the resources to do it right, they should choose a different product or they will be disappointed. ( i know the sales guys would shoot me for saying that.. :) )

Well, im impresd. A lot of companiues still just refuse to use common sense and not support virtualized setups, even tho there is no reason not to ( if its managed properly, but that goes for physical too. )

This is a good thing as i plan on putting esxi on all my sever hardware this summer and run a 1:1 ratio. It will help me with DR and hardware upgrades down the road.  They wont be part of our VMcluster, but really dont need to be either.
