Search Tools
Updated: 21 May 2010 | 1 comment
Hi, I've been asked to investigate a solution for searching archived content in conjuction with live data. The sort of products I've been looking at are Windows Desktop Search (WDS) and X1. These tools allow you to perform a single search and receive results from your email, file shares, and even sharepoint. Ideally what I am looking for is something that will work effeciently on a terminal server (citrix) and be able to search archived files and emails directly from the vault (or leverage the EV index)
So far I have found:
- X1 will only search offline vault and hence requires outlook cache mode = not good for terminal servers
- X1 does not work on the terminal server (so I have been told by the admins)
- WDS 2.6 can search the online & offline vault but is not effecient for terminal servers because it operates per user (a process for each user as well as an index for each user). Also in my testing I can't get it to search the online vault.
- WDS 3.0 runs as a service with a single index for all users so is good for multiuser however it can't search the online vault and hence requires a local offline vault and outlook cache which is bad for terminal servers
As you can see none of these fit. Can anyone give some advise?
Currently running EV7 SP1 (soon to be SP5 and could be upgraded to 2007 with a business case)
Thanks

ZAP,
If you should find such a product that would be the Holy Grail of EV searching.
I've been working alot with X1 and with OV enabled it's pretty darn good. The interface is a little more pokey then I like but it beats all the other desktop search tools I've used for e-mail searches hands down (not so great on file searching).
I believe X1 also has a ridicuoulsy overpriced enterprise search product that would index the online vault as well. From what I've been told this product does not use the EV index but builds its own indexes based on the VSP contents. This effectively means a 1 to 1 ratio of X1 servers to EV servers.
We have also been looking at a solution for TS and I have found nothing to help here.
If you should find something please post to let the rest of know.
Regards
Joe
