Securely erase disk drive ?

Hi people,

How does one securely delete disk drive for a physical server ?

I have searched through google and come up across this utility: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO9581

where can I download it ?

looking at the link you posted, it comes with deployment solutions, do you have the license for that?

that's what I'm not sure with.

I only have Symantec Ghost version 9 and above stand alone product, so I wonder if this can be downloaded freely ?

...if you have a branded server like HP for example, this can be done through SmartStart which is shipped with the server, or is downloadable.

Other manufacturers would have something similar...no license required.

Perform Server Maintenance

By selecting the Maintenance icon in SmartStart, you can perform the following:

  • Insight Diagnostics - performs tests on system components. Insight Diagnostics displays information about a server's hardware and software configuration. You can perform hardware and software tests on the following subsystems: Processor, Input devices, Communication ports and devices, Storage devices, Graphics, Memory, Multimedia devices and now the remote management processor (ILO, RILOE II).
  • Array Configuration Utility (ACU) and Array Diagnostics Utility (ADU) have been combined into a single utility that enables you to configure and perform device tests on newly added Smart Array controllers and associated storage devices. It is a web-based tool that has a configuration wizard that allows you to configure your Smart Array controller, add additional disk drives to an existing configuration or reconfigure your existing disk drive array.
  • Erase Utility - provides options to clean different areas of the system: attached drives, non-attached drives, BIOS, and non-volatile RAM (NVRAM)

It works incredibly well John. Any servers due to be sent back to the rental agents or sold when EOL are wiped using this.

I got plenty of Smart Start CD in my drawer and never knew that it is the answer to my problem.
