When using Symantec endpoint encryption for removable storage 8.0.1 I can access files on an external drive with a default password. If I change the default password under removable storage in the user client will it encrypt the data with the new password? Will the current data be unusable until the password is changed back to the original? How long does it take to change encryption? Are there any best practices for periodically changing passwords for removable storage?

If you change your default

If you change your default password then the file will not open and will prompt you for a password.  At this point you can enter the old default password and the file will be opened.

To re-encrypt your files with the new password you will need to move them (or copy and delete) back to the local hard-drive, change your default password and then copy them back again.  They will then have the enw default password.

Hope this helps

You can also use the session

You can also use the session and/or alternate password settings in the client. Set your desired password as your default, and then put the password you have been using under the alternate password field(s).

Copy them to the hard drive and back, and now it should reencrypt with your new password automatically.

Depending on your install, you may have to delete the files off your target drive to overwrite them.
