  • 1.  Seeing the management server that SEP clients are connected to

    Posted Oct 01, 2013 10:46 AM

I have set up a second server and replicated my SEP 12 database over to it.  I then re-homed my clients to the new server.

Is there a way in SEPM to see which management server my clients are connected to?  I thought I saw this information at one time but cannot seem to find it now.  I want to make sure all clients are homed to the new server without any problems before I decommission the old one.

    Thanks

    Michael

You can turn off the service on the old SEPM to make sure they move over to the new SEPM.

Run the Computer Status from the Monitors page and export to CSV and drop into Excel and filter. It should show which SEPM each client is connected to.

Can you confirm you did the rehoming using the replication method?

If so, then when you log into the old SEPM, the clients managed by the new SEPM will have a little red arrow on them:

    Thank you for the replies,

    _Brian:

When exporting I only see a server column which seems to be the server that I run the export on.  I thought I would see a "Management Server" column.

    SML:

I did use the replication method.  I can see both servers as replication partners.  I then pushed out new communication settings.

On both servers my client icons are "Can communicate"(green dot) or " Cannot Communicate"(light blue monitor) I see no red arrows any place.

Most clients on the old server show offline.  When compairing the two servers some clients show the green dot on both servers but no red arrow.  Other clients have a green dot on the new server but not on the other.

So you used the replication method but disabled replication afterwards, is that correct?

If the SEPMs are not still replicating, then they cannot tell each other that a client is connected to one over the other (red arrow icon).

In which case, you're just looking for the lack of a green dot on the client records on the old SEPM.

To be fair, with a default config, the old client records will eventually start dropping off the old SEPM anyway (as they are no longer attempting to talk to it).  By default, this will happen after 30 days.

I had left replication on but it seems that there are some issues with replication not working 100% now when I know it worked when I started this project.

thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I had to perform a server restart on my old server and then I initiated replication.  I now have the client list on the old server populating with the red arrows.

Thank you again for the brainstorming.

I'm glad to be of help (i.e. first post regarding the the red arrow icons has helped you determine which clients are being managed by the new SEPM, and that my second post brought to your attention that replication wasn't working.)
