semsvc.exe uses 99% of cpu
Updated: 21 May 2010 | 15 comments
The semsvc.exe process eases up all the cpu power and put a Dual-Xeon-Server down on his knees.
I´m using the MR2 release on a SBS 2003 r2 fully patched premium server and don´t know how to solve the problem without restarting the machine which is not the way servers are build for.
I appreciate any ideas instead of reinstalling the server. :-)

Maybe I found an issue. Do you use SAS-Controller in your system?
HI,
Can you please let me the application / softwares on this system which is consuming High CPu utilisation..
Also let me know the SEP 11.0 actual version installed on this machine..
Rgrds,
SAM
OS:
MS SBS Premium 2003 r2
Applications:
CA ArcServe r11.5 SP3
Mail Security 6.0.5.235
Just installed Endpoint Protection 11.0.2000 MR2 with MP1 and hope for improvements.
I have similar issue with that service and also others:
https://forums.symantec.com/syment/board/message?board.id=endpoint_protection11&thread.id=12730
If you find any solutions would love to hear it.
Sounds very familiar.
The server is responding to several (minor cpu intense) services like ping and DNS. It is not possible to logon (or it takes mor than 1 hour) and there seems to be always an issue with RDP.
I have also seen never an error in any log file, because everything is working fine but unuseable slowly.
Updating the SAS-Controllers firmeware interestingly helped to lower the cpu from average 43% to 1%, but it took only 10 days to bring the server to his knees.
Hi Friend,
You are using backup software such as Arc Server as well as Symantec Brightmail Antispam 6.0.5 on the same server.
Hence this is not a good practise.
Further if u need to run all on the same server. then i would strongly suggest you to exclude SBAS folder in C:/Program files/ as well as Arcserver folder tooo from realtime as well as schedule scanning and then you can see the impact..
Check out and let me know.

Hi Sam_Shaikh!
Im not using Symantec Brightmail Antispam 6.0.5 on the same server, but I still have the problem on several servers. It´s a really big problem for myself and my customers because of destroying their server performance. I´ve got problems with sqlservr.exe, too, which eats up more than 1GB of RAM and 99% of CPU performance.
It seems like the end of endpoint protection. How can I sell this virus anymore?????
I NEED URGENTLY A SOLUTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi bunfried,
i had the same problem with an Dual-Xeon on a Win2003 RC2 Server.
Only Solution that works:
- uninstalling all symantec stuff by using the CleanWipe-Tool achieved from Symantec Support.
- reinstall the Server with MR2.
Sorry, but all other Troubleshooting was unsuccessful.
Fortunately we are in the Testphase.
Hi RiPu,
did you just reinstall the Symantec Software or also the OS?
Because we´re are still in "production" :-/
We never solved this problem.
Did anyone else?
Have you all checked for free space on your hard drives? See this KB
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2007111411423948
If you all have plenty of free space you might want to open a call witll Symantec technical support.
has anyone had their SEPM in debug mode or collected logs for this?
for instance, does the scm-server log file show anything?
seems like the SEPM is constantly trying to do something, we just need to work out what.
What version is everyone running?

Space isn´t an issue. Never less than 10GB available.
How can I start it in debug mode? I´ve never read something about this possibility?
