    Hi,

For those knowledgeable people out there, Could you please clarify is you require "Client for Microsoft Networking" to be installed on a client device for SEP 11 Proactive Threat Protection component to function correctly?

    Cheers

    Dan.

Its far more essential for a basic computer to operate in a network

The Client for Microsoft Networks is an essential networking software component for the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems. A Windows computer must run the Client for Microsoft Networks to remotely access files, printers and other shared network resources

Its not mandatory that you need this to enable so that you can have SEP installed.
Proactive threat p rotection will not work on server OS ,will work on windows xp boxes.
You can install SEP without client for MS.
    Will work without any issues.

You would need it for Network threat Protection but for Proactive Threat Protection I don't think so..
    Still testing...

    Hi,

    Thanks for the responses,

Our infrastructure is Novell, and do not have the requirement to run MS Networking our client devices.

It would appear that MS Networking is required for PTP to function correctly in an Windows 2000 OS environment.

But, I can't get a definitive answer to this question.

    Cheers

    Dan.

Application and Device Control ( which is part of Proactive threat Protection)  works even without Client for Microsoft Networking installed.

Checked on my VM  with windows server 2003 and Winxp clients  works fine without client for MS.
    This got installed fine.

    Strange.....

I have an outstanding case, where SEP Client MR5, Proactive Threat Protection fails with "Heuristic Scan or Load Failure" as a managed client.

But if you were to install Client for MS Networking it resolves this issue !

    This is on Windows 2000

    Cheers

It's on all Windows 2K professional computers, (in a test environment at the moment, as migrating to SEP, but need to resolve this issue prior to live deployment)

    Hi,

Thanks for all your responses. The offical word from my case engineer is.....

    Quote

"We have received an update from our Backline Team regarding the issue. The error has been reproduced in our labs and has been confirmed as a product limitation. We are referring the case to our Engineering team and they will help us to analyze and provide the final solution which would possibly be in the form of a product update."

So it would appear that nobody in Symantec tested SEP 11 without Microsoft Networking !

    Cheers

    Dan.
