  • 1.  SEP 11 install fails, returning an error.

Hi. New to the Symantec forums, but I've been searching up and down for a solution, with no luck.
My daughter's laptop will be going off to college with her next month, and her university requires SEP 11. I"m getting the same error message as Charlie. I've tried every registry fix mentioned, and the Acer does not have a Logitech camera installed. I've looked at the winxsx files, looked for registry keys, everything mentioned, and I cannot fiond the solution. The laptop is an Acer, running Windows Vista Home Premium X-64 SP2..

I've done everything on the above two links. I have also installed and run the SEP Support tool, wich shows no errors, only two warnings. Neither of these two warnings apply as they are aimed toward a network installation. Using system restore I went back to the uninstallation of AVG free, and had to reinstall it, but at least she is protected for now. Please help me out

To correct this issue, follow the steps below:

Uninstall the following Acer utilities in order:
    Acer eSettings Management
    Acer ePerformance Management
    Acer eLock Management
Acer eDataSecurity Management. At the end of this uninstallation, reboot the client
Acer eAcoustics Management. At the end of this uninstallation, reboot the client eProtection
    Acer Empowering Technology Framework

The following applications do not have to be uninstalled.
    Acer eSettings for Desktop
    Acer eLook
    Acer Management Framework

From Acer's support website, info regarding the technology: http://support.acer-euro.com/empowering_technology/#ETD

But I have tried everything on that page. now I'm going to do a step by step removal of the Acer garbage. Some of them have already been removed as useless anyway.  Never liked it and she doesn't use most of it anyway. I'll let you know how it works.

eSettings, ePerformance, and eLock had already been removed. After the reboot following the removal of eData Security Management it installed flawlessly. The eAcoustics management had also been removed before we gave her the laptop last Christmas. The 'Empowering Tachnology' did not seem to cause any issues; It's still there.

Thank you very much for the quick response.

Why do the OEMs install all that junk in the first place??? *sigh*

    Thanks again!!

This work-around is effective in every situation and is not limited to Acer laptops. I have had this issue under Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP and the solution is not always limited to OEM crapware or registry settings. I have found that this work around is universal.

    1. Extract the Installer file (SEP11_32bit.exe or SEP11_64bit.exe) to a folder so you can access the .msi file

    2. Install the Windows SDK
    2.Install the Orca editor by double-clicking the Orca.msi file in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows 6.0a\bin folder.

    3. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Orca.

    4. On the File menu, click Open, and then browse to the Symantec AntiVirus.msi

    5.  Under the LaunchCondition table change the condition NOT (MsiSystemRebootPending = 1) AND NOT (REBOOTREQUIREDOSAUTOUPDATE = "1")
    to NOT (REBOOTREQUIREDOSAUTOUPDATE = "1").

    6. Save and Close Orca and then Run the Symantec AntiVirus.msi file to install

So I spent the last several days trying to research and figure out why SEP 11 would not load on 18 computers.  I read all the blog support on the net for SEP 11 and tried many of them, time and again.   I even contacted Symantec on several occasions, but no one was helpful.  Frustrated,  luck would have it that one computer finally took SEP 11, but I had forgotten many of the steps and changes that I had made to the computer.  On a second computer, I took copious notes and I finally found my solution.  This morning I completed installing SEP 11 on all the computers.
