Trying to install SEP 11 mr1 on 2008 server but having endless problems. First install attempt, server was not showing in management console, second attempt pushed out the install and server crashed trying to connect to management server for updates. Any help or suggestions are welcome thanks.

That version is positively ancient in Internet years. The current release is much, much better.

Windows Server 2008 is not a supported OS for SEP 11 MR1. You need to download and install SEP MR4MP2 for that OS. In fact, you should have received a warning about this during the installation process.

I actually got no warning when I attempted to install the client side. I did get a warning however when I tried installing Server and Console. I did eventually get it installed, with the exception of Network threat protection portion. But thanks for the heads up.

    King,

You would not receive any warning, because the Core of 2008 is similar to 2003.  The differences in the file system and handling make up the difference.  When MR1 was released it did not support 2008.
You should definitely upgrade to MR4 MP2.

For NTP.  NTP is not supported on any Server OS.  You will receive in your "event viewer" Heuristic scan failures and non supported OS errors.  You should consider removing this portion from the Server as it will most likely report errors that are known and may "skew" your overall reports.

Network Threat Protection (NTP) is supported on a server. Though it's probably not a great idea to install it on one. That's the firewall. It's Proactive Threat Protection (PTP) that does not function on a server or 64 bit OS.

Apologies and thanks for the clarification on that Ted G.  I always get those 2 mixed up.  There are only so many acronyms that the brain can remember and associate to error logs, especially in the morning.

    Event ID: 76 - Symantec Anti-Virus.
TruScan has generated an error: code 15: description: Scan not supported (Invalid OS)

Same error on Server and in 64 bit OS.

Has the wording changed or am I getting confused with a different error message from a different product?  (definitely need more coffee this morning)

No Problem Jason. That error message is from PTP,  AKA Truscan Proactive Threat Scan installed on a server.

The error message comes from a 64 bit.  But as you stated, should be the same error message on a server.

We use it on servers to monitor what gets plugged into USB ports.

Yes, and in this case you must also have PTP installed, as Application and Device Control is part of that component. So there are valid reasons to include in in a package for a server. Though PTP will still show as "off" in the client's main UI screen.
