  • 1.  SEP 11 MR6 MP2 and XP SP3 defrag

    Posted Mar 16, 2011 04:11 PM

We have an unmanaged client running XP SP3 and SEP 11 MR6 MP2 (build 11.0.6200.754) and have gotten a curious message when defragging the "C" drive (right click on the C drive icon select PROPERTIES-TOOLS-DEFRAGMENTATION).   We don't know exactly when the issue began.   This particular machine has been upgraded from SAV CE 10.1 to SEP 11 MR5 to SEP 11 MR6a to SEP 11 MR6 MP2.

This is a bare bones XP SP3 machine, just the OS and SEP installed.

When the XP defrag completes, we get the message "Some files did not defragment, check report".   The File fragmentation section in the report shows 1 file with 4 fragments.   The pane at the bottom of the report that should list the file name(s) that did not defragment is empty.

We've tried disabling SEP before running defrag, but still get the message.   Also, defragging in safe mode doesn't make any difference, We still get the same message.

Any ideas as to find out what the file is that won't defragment - and - any potential workaround?  We suspect that it has something to do with SEP since that's the only other software on the machine besides Windows XP SP3.   It appears that something has the file in question locked thus preventing defrag from defragging it.

Are there any errors in the Windows Event viewer? What SEP features are installed on this client?

If you are running low on disk space the Windows defragmenter may have difficulty defragmenting your HDD.  XP needs 15% of the total HDD capacity to run properly (you would get an informative message if you don't have enough room).

No.   We've got plenty of disk space - only 60% full.   We do not get any warnings about not enough disk space to defrag

The SEP client has AntiVirus, Proactive Threat Protection and Network Threat Protection installed.

Try turning off one feature at a time and see if the problem goes away.

    Hello,

    Did you check the Report?

Just of Curiosity, What makes you think, due to what reason the issue could have occurred?

You say you Disabled Symantec. That also means Symantec was not running on your machine when defragmenting the XP machine.

Cycletech above guided you to the proper article.

I would request you to go through the same.

Else, I personally would Recommend you contact Microsoft

We've already done all of the routine checking that Cybertech recommends.

Right now, we think it may be related to some Windows maintenance that was put on the client.   Only two things have changed recently 1) we upgraded the client from 11.0.5 to 11.0.6 MP2 and 2) Windows maintenance (16 patches) was put on earlier this week.

We can restore back to before the Windows maintenance was installed and run defrag to see if we still have the issue.   If defrag runs normally, then we'll have to install the Windows patches one by one to see which one causes the issue.

We'll post the resolution here when we figure it out.
