SEP 11.0.5002.333 + Win 7 Firewall Issues

Saheem G's picture

I have SEP 11.0.5002.333 64 bit unmanaged client installed.  Since I installed it on Windows 7, things like FTP (not using PASV) and SMB mounts do not work.  I tried updating the firewall rules.  However this seemed to have no effect.  I even disabled Network Threat protection.  What do I need to update to be able to establish trusted networks where something like this can work?

Thanks in advance.

I couldn't really tell from

I couldn't really tell from the logs.  I would try ftp from the command prompt and check the logs and it appeared nothing was added.

This was a fresh install.  My system came with Norton Internet Security.  I uninstalled it.  Then I installed SEP.

For getting logs for NTP logs

For getting logs for NTP logs you have to  enable it.
In the client change settings--->NTP you will get an option for it...

logs

I looked at all the logs and enabled packet trace.  I don't see anything blocked for ftp.exe.  I did see IPV6 traffic blocked.  I disabled the IPV6 rules in the firewall settings.  Howerver I still saw some IPV6 traffc blocked using the same rule.  Any idea why?

just another suggestion

You can also try the command mentioned in the following article:

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/h...

Also, please check if you are able to list the shared folders on the remote machine from command promt

net view \\x.x.x.x

The winsock command seems to

The winsock command seems to not have changed anything:  Ftp continues to connect, but ls commands hang.

The net view command seems to work.  When I do net use, I get connected however dir commands fail with file not found.

reinstalled

I uninstalled SEP.  Then I ran the Norton Removal Tool for Internet Security.  Then I re-installed.  Once I reinstalled, FTP worked.  I then restarted windows 7.  Now FTP is not working again.

turned off windows firewall

The solution was to turn off the windows firewall.  Isn't the SEP Network intrusion protection a firewall?  I don't think I need the windows firewall enabled as well, correct?
