week ago i was on Symantec

week ago i was on Symantec seminar

i asked several questions about new SEP 12.1

1) it will work on Tomcat (no IIS+Tomcat as in 11.0)

2) it will support Mac os clients (logs+definitions updates)

3) it will Support Linux clients (only connection to SEPM - logs, defs from internet)

4) several new features like Reputation Protection, new Sonar (truScan), ScanLess (scanning only not scanned or changed files)

5) all features (PTP, NTP) will be supported on x64

only i do not know if SEPM will be both x86 and x64

SEP Stumbling Block for our migration to 64Bit

It will be a great news if SEP 12.1 will finally support Application and Device Control and right clicking of virus scan.  Hope Symantec will release this soonest as it is our stumbling block in migrating to Windows 7 64Bit.

Because of the delay we are now moving towards Win7 32Bit.

Is it really that worth waiting?

<Cloud detection> Why until now?

Some vendors like F-Secure, Trend or McAfee incorporated the Cloud to improve their detection process since 2008/2009surprise, why until now SYM will use this in SEP 12.x as corporative endpoint? or what differences or advantages will incorporate versus the competitors?

Will you be able to upgrade from SEP 11 ?

Or will you have to uninstall & install ? same with management server and databases ?

We're currently planning and testing our migration to Windows 7, so if it's a new management server & database needed then I'll wait till it's in public beta to start planning the AV protection & policies, if it's a seamless upgrade then I can forget about it completely :P

SNAC wont change

SNAC wont change substantially in this release.  It will support Mac and their are some management enhancements.  SEP by itself still has self-enforcement capability. You could go with SNAC starter edition - it leverages the SEP firewall for self-enforcment.

SEPM performance

Any word on whether the horrific performance of SEPM is addressed? Or the rate of false positives it seems to log such as calling it's own .tmp files malware or double-counting "still infected" machines by events instead of by machine?

SEPM: good performance. No false positives here.

SEPM performance is good when used as designed.  If you are having an issue, I hope you are able to resolve it.

In our enterprise we find the false positive rate to be zero, unless you count one detection several years ago involving a personal install of non-sanctioned software a user installed for his home printer. We use a large variety of software, and as you can see, our workstations are not locked down from user installs.

Our remedy for the  DWHxxxx.tmp file issue was to basically clear the \xfer folder and the  \xfer_tmp folder under here:

    \All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\

Thanks

SEPM's performance has been

SEPM's performance has been improved in 12.1 - there has been a lot of db optimization.  The reporting of infected status of machines will also be more accurate.

SEP has alway had a low FP rate, but it will be even lower with 12.1 because we can do a reputation check on files before indicting them. The Norton products have been using this for 2 years - and the results are extremely strong.

Fixed Client on Windows File Server Now?

Hello

Will SEP 12 finally work on Windows File Servers without causing logins with roaming profiles to take hours as opposed to seconds and file transfers to crash and never complete or to transfer at a few kb/sec?

I have been able to re-produce this issue on every server I have installed the client on. As a result the servers remain unprotected as the client was causing too many issues. I logged it with Microsoft and it was recommended to uninstall the client as this was the only solution as Microsoft agreed it was incompatible with Vista/7. I tried turning off Windows Server 2008 R1/R2's advanced networking features and various other troubleshooting steps but it made no difference and just caused serious network slowness each time. Version 10 never gave me any problems and still doesn't.

As soon as the client was uninstalled everythnig returned to normal.

This was with Network Threat Protection disabled too.

Can you confirm this is fixed?

Thanks

Hello Brian81   Yes I did

Hello Brian81

Yes I did open a case althought the post appears to have been moved or deleted now. It had been here: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/after-install-domain-controller-profies-folder-redirection-take-30-minutes-log-first-timeThanks. I think there was at least one more but I cannot find it anymore.

I did log one or two related issues which I initially logged with Microsoft until I tracked the issues down to Symantec:

After moving to new domain controller getting issues with roaming profiles:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winservergen/thread/f23a14b1-490b-4c76-ac2a-d21230bc2393

Endpoint Protection Blocking File Copying to Network Shares and Crashing Explorer:

http://news.support.veritas.com/connect/forums/endpoint-protection-blocking-file-copying-network-shares-and-crashing-explorer

Need permission from myself to delete files:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprosecurity/thread/2791c825-c726-4570-9fb7-8165f7b3ecad

I could find no workaround but to uinstall the product from any server where I intended to access shares over the network. Normally shares would work initially but them just stop working and lock up any pc which attempted to access the shares.

Sometimes the only solution was to do a hard reset of the domain controllers and client pcs to bring everything back online until the next time it went off.

These issues did seem to affect others too and I tried every troubleshooting step suggested. Everything went back to normal after removing the antivirus so I have just left the servers unprotected ever since. Actually I did give it another chance more recently with a newer version and Server 2008 R2 but the same issues started occuring straight away.

@robinwilson16

The file copy to network file server issue was running rampant in our network - this pair of Forum posts contain good info and the fix provided remediated our issues;

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/cannot-copy-files-using-smb-20-protocol-sep-11-ru6-and-ru6a

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/downloads/smb2-toggle-too-mikes-tool-set

Watch for ETHO about 2/3 the way down in the first linked forum thread.  It appears to be a conflict between SEP NTP and Windows SMB v.2.0

Thanks a lot

Hello tommyhawk

Thanks for the info. This does indeed seem to be the problem I have faced.

Back in 2009 when I first experienced the issue I couldn't find much on it then and tried all kinds of things such as setting up new domain controllers and DNS servers and disabling extra settings on the network adapters and some of the new networking protocols which Windows Vista/7 have. I have tested it again which each new release I have rolled out and it is always the same.

It occurred when I moved the domain to 2008 servers so I thought it was something to do with that (as the issue doesn't occur on 2003 fileservers) so spent ages working on the domain setup.

From the sounds of it MR3 fixes the issue so I'll try that.

Thanks for your help.

Compatibility with Internet Explorer 9

There was a compatibility issue between SEP 11 and Internet Explorer 9 (Beta). Managed client stopped updating. I had to return to IE 8 (PTP never began to upgrade again on managed client).

Will SEP 12 correct this and allow use with IE9? Has that problem been addressed yet in SEP 11?

SEP11 / 12 for Win7SP1 64bit endpoints

Greetings folks,

I was under the impression that a compatibility problem exists with SEP 11 on Win7 SP1 endpoints.

I did not see this mentioned in the release notes forRU6MP3.

Is there a SEP 12 fix in scope for that, or was it addressed and just not mentioned?

tl;dr - is RU6MP3 compatibile with Win7SP1 64 bit endpoints?
