I have been testing this

I have been testing this since March and here's my notes so far

1. SEP 64bit finally supports App and Device Control

2. Deployments are much easier and the reporting around it is nice

3. Location Awareness can finally use host groups

4. I can actually read a notification or report on my iphone

5. The balloon notification for app control only shows the custom message which is great. In SEP v11 it always included the process name, handle, etc.. and then the message which was confusing for users.

6. Exceptions for SONAR (Truscan replacement) appear to be MUCH easier to implement.

7. New Insight Technology effectiveness still to be determined but I like the report that shows the URL, executible downloaded, and if the user chose to download the exe

8. Live Update performance appears to be much improved

9. Proxy settings for Live Update can now be controlled by SEP policy. In SEP 11, SAV10, etc.. this could only be done manually on each system

10. Scans seem faster but I'm surprised that my test systems doesn't have more files that show up as trusted.

11. Randomization of scans for VM's is very great. Auto detecting VM's is nice as well.

12. The new reboot options are really nice for upgrades and deployments.

13. Right click scan works for 64bit systems.

There's still a laundy list of items that I would like to see added but I like what I see so far.

Agreed, as far as what they have done, the only thing I dont like from what Ive seen after install- I miss the old color scheme from 11.x :) BUT am very glad to see that its still not bloated :) one of the many reasons I choose Symantec over any other AV.

Just downloaded

I just downloaded the files and to my surprise the download site has improved tremendously.

I downloaded all files in just 20 minutes.

Wauw. That is what we call speed.

One curious thing I did

One curious thing I did notice is that I had SSR 2011 installed on my system. Then I installed SE 12.1 beta and it appears that when I run LU for SSR it still users the older versions whereas when I run LU for SEP 12.1 beta, it uses the newer version.

Any ideas why these two products don't just run the same version of LU?

LUE vs WLU

Hi Eric,

We no longer use the Windows LiveUpdate client for SEP12.1 and have switched to using the LiveUpdate Engine, which is shipped as a component of SEP12.1 rather than a seperate install.  This is the same update engine that is used in NIS/NAV and N360.  It gives us much better performance and allows us to take advantage of idle time updating, etc.

SSR is clearly still using Windows LiveUpdate for the moment.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the information! I also noticed, upon launching IE9 that SEP 12.1 beta also included  the Symantec Intrustion Prevention Plug-In for IE. Exactly what is this supposed to do for IE? While I usually  use Firefox 4, I'm guessing that the plug in somehow ties into a security service/feature of SEP 12.1 beta. Am I right?

Have a good weekend.

Hi Eric,

Yes, thats our "Browser Intrusion Prevention" system.

It allows us to interpret obfuscated code at run time within the browser (both IE and FF), thereby preventing specific browser focused attacks.

Hi  Paul,

Glad to learn about the Browser Intrusion Program. So, how does it work for FF 4? I don't see a plug-in for FF4 in Win 7 Enterprise 64 bit like I do with IE 9 (as mentioned previously). Is it implemented differently for FF4?

Lifeupdate Server?

Hello,  Loaded the 64-bit Client and all went well, but the Live Update does not seem to be working.  I have no issues connecting to internet from this Vista machine and I think I should be able to connect to the liveupdate server to check for update.  Any Thoughts?

Thanks!

I've seen a similar error, but its been specifically focused around proxies.

Does your client have direct Internet access or via a proxy?

If its via a proxy, please try changing the proxy settings for LiveUpdate in Change Settings\Client Management\LiveUpdate and see if that helps.

If you are going direct, can you correctly resolve liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com ?

Paul,  Thanks for the links.  I was able to download the zip files from that computer with no problem.  It does not use a proxie.  Also I am able to use the 12.1 Client on another Vista machine with no problems with the liveupdate.  Rather strange!

Appreciate your help and input.

No problems here

I installed the management server on 2008 r2 64 bit and installed the client on windows xp, windows 7 64 bit and 32 bit versions and also upgraded a vista 32 bit, and everything works like a charm.
Sep 12 is a great enhancement for me.

Problems with Download Site

Is anyone else having problems with downloading the beta?  I've been trying since last night and the site won't let me log in.  It just keeps telling me to try again later.  I even rest my password twice and still no luck.  I finally tired creating a new account and it tells me "The site is down"

Well, yes, that's about right . . . . though those features include a whole new security stack including Insight, SONAR, browser protection, parity between 32 and 64 bit security . . . in short a brand new client as well important featues to support virtualization a number of management enhancements . . .

It has clients for Mac and Linux - though the latter remains unmanaged.   They haven't changed much in this release.

Marketing...

Unfortunately, some of the marketing went overtime on the Mac and Linux piece - it has since been corrected.

SAV for Linux is still provided and with the latest version, there is the ability for the SAV for Linux client to send events to the SEPM.  The SEP for Mac client is present, and has been there since RU6 - there are a few improvements in the 12.1 version though, including location awareness for the client, so there are changes, but managed Linux is not in 12.1

On the face of it, it may seem like 11 + new bits, (including a complete overhaul of pretty much all the protection engines) but its so much more than the sum of its parts - try it and you will see...

12.1 Installed and Running Well!

I downloaded the new management console and documents last night.  Did an upgrade installation on one of my backup servers and it installed in record time and without a hitch!  I then did a push of the new client to a Windows 2000 (32 bit) server, a Windows 2003 (also a 32 bit server) and two Windows 2008 (64 Bit) Servers.  Everything went extremely smoothly and is running like a champ! So far no problems at all to report and really and I really like the new features (especially the proactive threat protection).

Nicely done Symantec!smiley

Quick Note For Everyone

Hi all,

Just want to make sure everyone understands the naming for the "SMB" or small business edition and the Enterprise Edition DO have different names.  So, as you are posting questions and commenting, please use the following to help us determine which product you are discussing (if it's not understandable from the content of your message).

Version 12.1 = small business edition

Version 12.x = enterprise edition

So, if you are creating a brand new thread, you'll also notice "Endpoint Protection" (AV) has 12.x as a version listed now.

Additionally, if you create a new thread and your product selection  is "Endpoint Protection Small business" you'll notice versions for 12.0 (currently available) and 12.1, which is obviously only in Beta at the writing of this post.

Let myself, or one of the Beta Group Admins know if you have any questions.  I hope this clarifies any questions.

Best,

Eric

Since I am working with

Since I am working with customers administering SEP SBE 12.0.1 product, I would like to highlight that a migration from that version to Amber enterprise (at least in the current beta version) is possible and actually works quite well. For further information about this, please read the following article on Symantec Connect:

SEP12.1 Download Insight?

I have installed the 12.1 client and in checking the Download Insight tab the Select Level for Download sensitivity is greyed out.  Can this section be changed without the SEPM 12 managing the clients?

Thanks

SEPM 12 expiration

I have successfully installed SEPM 12 beta and really like the performance and options for installing to clients.  I installed SEP 12 remotely to a few clients with no issues compared to my experience with SEPM 11.

Once we are out of beta and the SEPM 12 expires after 60 days, do need to reinstall with a full version or can I use the existing install and just reactivate with a version 12 serial#?  I'm hoping for the latter as it would save me time.

Thanks,

Troy

Hi Troy

I'm glad you like the new SEP12.  The code you currently downloaded is the beta code.  We are taking your feedback and your peer's feedback. When we officially shipping the product later this year, it will be the gold code.  It will likely to be slightly different than the beta version you are running today.

When SEP 12 is officially shipping and you are currently on active maintanance, you will upgrade to SEP 12 at no extra charge.  If you are migrating from SEP 11 or any beta version of SEP 12, it will be a seamless upgrade, no rip and replace.  We will have more detailed instructions on how to upgrade without causing too much interruption to your daily tasks.

Thank you,

Cindy

SEPM 12 is about to expire

Hello,

I have been successfully running the trial version of of SEPM 12 and installed SEP12 to most of my servers and clients.  However, my trial licenese is about to expire and I would like to know if it's possible to get an extension long enough until the full version of 12 arrives.  I do have a maintainance and support contract.  I don't want to revert back to version 11 as I have experience many problems running the v11 manager.

Is it possible to get an extention?  Can SEPM11 communicate with SEP12 clients/servers?

Blocking of user's ability to disable SEP

I am using Hyper-V to test SEP12 Enterprise Beta.

I am happy that previous issues for 64Bit such as: right click manual scanning of files/folders, Appplication Control and USB blocking are all working great.

However, I am not able to block user's ability to disable SEP12 even after following http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH102822&locale=en_US

Do others see the same thing or is this just a Hyper-V related issue.

Hoping for your assistance.

SQL 2008R2 Support

Is this version of SQL officially supported or any project for next future ?

It'd be great moving our current Win2003R2 to Win2008R2 and in parallel upgrade DB.

Thanks for helping

Paul, from Symantec site

Paul, from Symantec site about SEP 11 RU6 requirements: :

'The Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager includes an embedded database.

You may also choose to use one of the following versions of Microsoft SQL Server:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 with Service Pack 3 or later
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 with Service Pack 2
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (all Service Packs) "

No mention to SQL2008R2.

Further to this, a support engineer confirmed that list and that R2 version of DB will be included into SEP12.

SQL2008R2 & SEP 11 RU6

Thanks Paul,

Just double checking if we're talking about SQL2008R2 and not Win2008R2.

Any Symantec doc or link with support for this DB ?

Upgrade Path

I realise that it is not recommended to install a beta into production, but will there be an upgrade path from the beta to the released version?

RohanP, you would be able to

RohanP, you would be able to upgrade the current beta to the RTM build. You are covered. :)

Is there SEPM 12 beta software available as well?  If so, where would I download this from?

Possible Tamper Protection problem, and a few suggestions.

Tamper Protection alerts me when I run my Windows XP Mode (using the Virtual PC Function of Windows 7 Enterprise Edition) - so long as I have the option enabled to display a message when something is tampering with SEP.  It says that VPC.exe is tampering with Symantec when I run VPC (it then opens VPC.exe, anyway).    Is this some kind of bug or something, or is Microsoft's Virtual PC seriously trying to "tamper" with SEP?  Once I turn the notification off, VPC loads fine and Symantec doesn't alert me.  I'll just leave it like this, but I figured I would address it since it is a Microsoft program that causes the notification.

I also had to turn off "Block UPnP discovery from external computers" so I would not be bothered about "svchost.exe" - with SEP 11, it would only bother me about that when using the Windows Media Center Extender on an Xbox 360.  With SEP 12, it bothers me about it every 10 minutes or so, and as soon as I log in to my Windows 7 user account.  With the rule disabled, I get no notifications about it (which is good, for me).

EDIT:  A definite small bug is when you go to edit the Active and Scheduled scans (I checked 32bit and 64bit SEP).  The scan description has characters like "왰Å⬘Åorm" in place of "Perform."

In addition, I *love* that SEP now blocks "autorun.inf" from running on USB's as they get inserted.  But, I'd like to know if there was a way to stop that message from displaying?  I don't need to see that "autorun.inf" is blocked from running on USB's that don't even have autorun.inf on them!  I'd like to only see that message if SEP actually detected "autorun.inf" on the USB.  Other than that, I'd much prefer it to block it silently.  The way it is now, it makes it seem like every USB is infected with "autorun.inf"

EDIT 2:  Logged in today and immediately saw that SEP was scanning (the daily scheduled scan) due to seeing the scan pop up as soon as I logged in (it started the night before and I shut down the PC before the scan ended - the scan was apparently invisible as it should be since I didn't even know it was scanning last night).  Is there a way to keep scans completely invisible?  I don't want to ever see SEP do anything unless it detects an issue.

(And lol, sorry for suggesting so much in this post...  It's just that I love SEP, and the people I know like it because you neve know it's even there - unless it finds an issue.  I guess I would just like to keep it that way, as annoying pop-ups just make the product, well, annoying.  If I want to see that a scan is in progress, I'll open the program up and see what it's doing.  I don't need it making windows pop up that I cannot close - that's right - the only options you have when the scan pop-up appears is to pause, cancel, or minimize the window - you can't close/hide it.  So, I hope my suggestions are considered.  Thanks for making an awesome product.)

EDIT 3:  It's been a few days and SEP still tries to scan when I log in, even though I have disabled all of the scans.  I'm assuming it's because I kept canceling the scan, and it really wants to finish it.  Hopefully, after I let it finish, it won't do this again when I log in tomorrow.

EDIT 4:  Symantec still insists on running 2 simultaneous scans either when I log in, or after waking the computer up from being asleep - even though I have the Active Startup and the Daily scan disabled.  When I check the log, these scans are listed as "Manual scans."  I have just uninstalled/re-installed the program and will update you guys tomorrow on whether or not that solved my issue.

EDIT 5:  Re-installing SEP and keeping the scheduled scans off from the start seem to have fixed the "2 manual scans at every login" problem I was having.

SEP12 Graphics

I must say that i think that the GUI for SEP12 looks a bit like the "fake" antivirus programs out there.

I agree.  I also thought this about the GUI for SEP 11 compared to SAV.  Maybe the SEP 12 gui will grow on me
