SEP 12 RU2 unmanaged Mac client LiveUpdate schedule

Created: 03 Dec 2012 | 3 comments

Appologies if this topic has been covered already, but I didn't see it in a quick look through recent activity.  I'm looking at the unmanaged Mac client included in SEP 12 RU2 and finding some thing around update scheduling a little frustrating.

By default, the unmanaged installer looks to be setting LiveUpdate to run every hour:

LiveUpdate     DefaultLiveUpdateSchedul 1   0   Hourly         04:17  "All Products" -quiet

It does run in the background, which is an improvement over previous versions, but will likely annoy some users anyway.

Is running LiveUpdate every hour really the intended behavior?  Why?  Over on the Windows side of things, SEP run LiveUpdate every 4 hours be default with some additional settings to allow it to skip if virus defs are recent enough.

Thanks for any insight.

  1. Click Start > All Programs > Symantec Endpoint Protection > Symantec Endpoint Protection to open the Endpoint Protection user interface.
  2. Click on the Change Settings tab.
  3. Click on the Configure Settings button next to Client Management.
  4. Click on the Scheduled Updates tab.
  5. Select the frequency you would like the updates to occur.
  6. Select OK.

SET the live update schedule gor unmanaged sep client.

To schedule LiveUpdate to check daily at 1pm for updates for everything, and to have it show in the Symantec Scheduler UI when the user who created the task is logged in, but to launch in the background quietly when it runs:

symsched LiveUpdate "Update All Daily" 1 1 -daily 13:00 "All Products" -quiet
