SEP 12 vs Forefront Compare sheets??
Created: 05 Aug 2011 | 12 comments
Right now we are using SEP 11 and have plans to upgrade to SEP 12, but the powers that be want to switch to Forefront Endpoint Protection because it's included in our master agreement. I have searched for a sheet comparing SEP to FEP bup just can't find anything up to date.
The issue comes down to cost vs benefits, we get FEP for free so I need to show why SEP is better. Anyone got anything?
Anyone tested both products?
Thanks,
Marty

There is one out there for
There is one out there for SEP 11 vs FEP. I have not seen one for SEP 12.1 vs, FEP

I saw that one, it's 3 years
I saw that one, it's 3 years old and is for FCS not FEP. I was hoping Symantec would have something more up to date.
Best bet is to call to find
Best bet is to call to find out. I'm sure there is something out there but may not yet be publicly available.

This is something we are
This is something we are facing too. As of this month, our Microsoft Agreement includes ForeFront AV.
Our does too but we don't
Our does too but we don't bother.
I can say from personal experience FEP is not better than SEP.

Your Symantec Sales rep has
Your Symantec Sales rep has access to this data, and get you a copy. This is not typical documentation that is handed out lightly in fear of the competition getting its hands on it.
There is an online portal, save yourself the long hold times. Create ticket online, then call in with ticket # in hand :-) http://mysupport.symantec.com "We backup data to restore, we don't backup data just to back it up."
I'm pretty almost every admin
I'm pretty almost every admin (Symantec, McAfee, etc...) is being asked the same question if they just learned that FEP is available to them for free.
Same Here
I have been ask to compair the two. From my initial look at them in demo's SEP still beats FEP in my oppinion which shocked alot of people here as I am known as the MS Fanboy here. Now I will say that the gap has closed alot from when I last looked at it 2 years ago and if you have a SCOM server and the SCOM agent on all your endpoints it gets even smaller. We are doing a SCOM pilot here and I plan on doing a POC some time in the next 6-12 months of FEP just to see how it works in real life and not just the demos. Mean while I still plan on upgrading to 12.1
FEP has gotten better but MS
FEP has gotten better but MS needs to stick with what they do best and that isn't security.

Microsoft Not secure????
I will respectfully disagree that MS does not do security well. Compair the number of products they have with the number that say Adobe or Sun Java have and then compair the number of updates that are done. Microsoft actually fares pretty well when you start compairing numbers like that. They do get attacked alot due the their size and install base. Also compair the attacks vs when did the patch to prevent it get released and the worse of the attacks that hit the patch was out weeks before the attack happened and the people that got hit were just too lazy to install it.
Sorry, I should've clarified.
Sorry, I should've clarified. I meant in the endpoint (AV) security field in terms of overall features/technologies offered.

Here are some helpful resources for you...
Here are a few 3rd-party resources that should help make the decision not to use FEP clear. Whether it's effectiveness or performance you'll find that Forefront doesn't measure up to what's needed to protect from today's threat landscape. Namely, it doesn't include anything remotely close to the advantages offered by new technologies like Insight.
A condensed version of some of these findings is available at http://go.symantec.com/challenge
Hope this helps.
