  • 1.  SEP 12.1 Installation Path?

    Hello,

Is SEP 12.1 supposed to install to "C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\12.1.671.4971.105", rather than just "C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection"?

I have tried manual push upgrades from 11.0.6, auto upgrades from 11.0.6 and fresh installations of 12.1 and they all install to a directory named "12.1.671.4971.105".

This is a bit annoying from a administration/scripting standpoint, especially if future upgrades are consistent with this installation behavior and install in new directories with names based on the newer version you are upgrading to.

You create a new installation setting option as per this document; mentioning where it needs to be installed.

How to change the installation folder for a Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) client?

We now "silo" our installation, and replace on reboot.  That means, when a new version comes out (say, 12.2.100.1000), when the software is installed, it'll be written to C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\12.2.100.1000, and when the machine is rebooted, the loading points will be switched over to run the newer version.  If something happens during install of the new version (or, presumably, the switch from the older to the newer version), the installer will put the pointers back to the old software so that you'll boot with something that works, rather than a half-installed broken newer version.

You can only change the base installation folder, not the silo.

As Chris mentioed, we use the silo to isolate ourselves to facilitate things like replace on reboot, etc.

For those customers who need them, there are hard links to the most commonly used files in the Symantec Endpoint Protection folder, so you don't need to remember the number.

For our data folders, we have a link to the currently running version data, simply use the "CurrentVersion" folder shortcut.

If there are more commands you need from the silo, let us know and we can add them.
