SEP 12.1.2 - Proactive Threat Protection Definitions

Hi all,

I recently installed SEPM 12.1.2 and am in the process of rolling out the SEP 12.1.2 clients to a number of users. We noticed that the Proactive Threat Protection Definitions on the installed clients are showing as 16 January 2013 r11, whereas the Virus and Spyware Protection is showing as 06 February 2013 r6:

Our server is showing this when it comes to Live Update:

So, I checked your webpage that displays the latest updates and definitions (http://www.symantec.com/security_response/definitions.jsp?pid=sep1212) and for Behavious Based Protection, it says:

Definitions Released: 1/29/2013

Extended Version: 1/16/2013 rev. 11

Firstly, what is the difference between the extended version and the definitions released?

Secondly, the definitions release date stated on the above page is different to the defitnitions date our clients are reporting, is this supposed to be the case or are they not updating properly?

The PTP definitions will not always be the same as virus defs. Virus defs come out 2-3x per day while PTP may come out once a week or every other week or even month.

The clients should have latest PTP defs, downloaded via LiveUpdate. Jan 16th looks to be correct

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the quick response.

So is the Behavious Based-Proection defitnions date on the Symantec page wrong(http://www.symantec.com/security_response/definitions.jsp?pid=sep1212)

Or am I looking in the wrong place?

You are looking at the right place - extended version defs are for SEP 12.1 RU2 only, the standard one are for version below SEP 12.1 ru2.

As Brian stated - don't compare here the PTP defs revisions to the AV Definitions - as the release times and dates will be completely different. PTP Defs are releases at max. couple of times during a month.

PTP definitions will not always be the same as virus definition.
