SEP 12.1.671.4971 + Windows 7 SP1 = Action Center Problems

  • 1.  SEP 12.1.671.4971 + Windows 7 SP1 = Action Center Problems

    Posted Aug 05, 2011 11:07 AM

I recently updated my SEP version to 12.1.671.4971 and now Windows 7 Action Center states "Symantec Endpoint Protection reports that it is turned off."  It is not.  These are managed clients.  There were no issues with the upgrade and everything is enabled just fine.  I'd rather not just turn of the notification since it's there for a reason.  Is anyone else seeing this?

    Hello,

The Cause of this Issue is due to Symantec Endpoint Protection Client installation failure

    Here is the Solution:

    1.       Go to Control Panel \ Programs \ Programs and Features
    2.       Click on Symantec Endpoint Protection
    3.       Click Change
    4.       Click Next
    5.       Choose Repair, Click next, click Install

This will repair the Symantec Endpoint Protection client and solve the problem.

As of now, this issue is being investigated by Symantec Endpoint Protection Team.

Enable (Check on) for "Scan for security risks" setting for filesystem auto-protect in "Antivirus and Antispyware protection" policy.

If you unlock this configuration, the end PC user can enable it and settle the alerts in action center.

The policy applied to the clients exhibiting the behavior already had "Scan for security risks" enabled.  I disabled/reenabled it using policy, but it made no difference.  I then unlocked it and disabled/reenabled it from the SEP client and it still made no difference.  I don't think this is the issue.

Can you provide me with some detailed information on where I can find the install log to see the installation failure?  This is not a solution I'm happy with since it seems to happen to every deployed client.  I'll not be running around to every machine doing a repair install.  Will this be resolved in a version update?

please try this only on one machine client

    1) Go to to Control Panel\"Programs and Features"
    2) Modify SEP client and Install Outlook Scanner and Notes Scanner.

I installed the Outlook Scanner and the issue was resolved.  I then uninstalled the Outlook Scanner and the issue remained resolved.  This leads me to believe that the solution was actually more related to what Mithun Sanghavisuggested since adding any component to the SEP client would have caused it to repair anything that went wrong in the initial deployment.  I still have no real hands-off solution for clients that I may deploy in the future.

Try installing out look scanner only on other machine

And as Mithun rightly said repair also would fix the issue .

I have the same issue. 3 out of 4 test deployments have Windows Action Center issues.  I cannot deploy any other clients until this issue is resolved.

This looks like an issue that Symantec engineers are currently workign on.  Followers of this thread may be interested in the following article:

    Thanks for the link Mick2009

I'm glad to see that they're working to resolve it in future builds since a Repair isn't really a workable solution  in a lot of cases.

I've subscribed, so I hope it's updated when resolved.

I stopped deploying SEP 12.1 to my Clients.

What a Shame that such obviously Bug is in a Major Release.

Without a fast Bugfix Release we will stop using Symantec Products.

    I have the same issue.

Thankfully I only have a handful of Windows 7 clients.

Also on my Windows 7 machines, I seem to have lost the ability to "Disable Symantec Endpoint Protection" (grayed out) even though I'm in a group that has permissions to disable the FW.

I'm able to disable the FW on an XP machine.

Edit: It seems that I cannot right-click on the Symantec icon and disable the FW, (grayed out) but if I go to network threat options, I'm able to uncheck enable FW.

    yaay more bugs.

Have started deploying 12.1.671.4971 and Action Center reports that "Symantec Endpoint Protection is on but is reporting its status to Windows Security Center in a format that is no longer supported.  Use the program's automatic updating feature, or contact the program manufacturer for an updated version"

Going into programs and features appears to have fixed it for now on my PC, however, once we deploy this I don't want to have to repair every installation.  We are almost all Windows 7 at this point.

We have also the "Format that is no longer supported" Error on some Systems.

Please open a Case for it, so that Symantec will see, that this is a real problem, that needs to be fixed.

    Best Regards

Windows 7 Action Center same "no longer supported" message.  Repair does not fix.  Awaiting next release before additional rollouts.

If repair fails you can try to re-register SmcGui.exe:

    1. Click Start, Run and enter the command smc –stop
    2. Open command prompt, browse to the SEP installation folder and run the command SmcGui.exe /UNREGSERVER
    3. Run then the command SmcGui.exe /REGSERVER
    4. Click Start, Run and enter the command smc –start

Btw. from what version of SEP did you upgraded to 12.1?

I had upgraded from 11.0.6 to 12.1 and was getting the above issue but

    SebastianZ - your solution worked.

    Many thanks!
