SEP and Microsoft Windows Home Server
Updated: 31 May 2010 | 3 comments
I know it seems overkill, but a client with a very small 3-station 1-user network (the company was sold to another, this is what's left) running SBS 2003 is considering converting the server to a Windows Home Server, since WHS provides all the functionality they need.
They have already invested in SEP Small Business Edition, with annual maintenance, which mostly runs OK.
Will they be able to use SEP on WHS? Will the client work on WHS? Will the WHS server run SEPM?
WHS seems to be Server 2003 with a pretty shell, so my guess is SEPM should run on it. At worst, we could run SEPM on a Vista workstation.
If it runs, is it supported?

Windows Home Server is not
Windows Home Server is not supported. You would need to run the Manager on XP as Windows Vista is not officially supported for the SPC.
Symantec Protection Center system requirements
Intel Itanium IA-64 is not supported.
Windows Vista (32-bit, 64-bit) is not officially supported.
Client system requirements
Intel Itanium IA-64 is not supported.
The Remote Push Installation client deployment method does not verify that Internet Explorer 6.0 or later is installed on computers. If the computers do not have the correct version of Internet Explorer, the installation fails without warning.
Best,
Thomas
What you can run on the WHS
What you can run on the WHS is an unmanaged client.
From all the documents I have
From all the documents I have read, there is no mention of WHS. You can test and see what works, but remember there is no support if you run into issues.
Best,
Thomas
