This issue has been solved. See solution.

From what I've been able to discover, SEP is not supported on Windows NT 4.  Our volume license is currently for SEP - am I able to use an older version of SEP or Symantec AntiVirus to protect a couple servers I have which are still running NT 4?  If so, which would be the best version to use?

Thanks in advance,

I think SAV v9 is the last one for NT 4 but...

This page http://www.symantec.com/business/support/release_details.jsp?pid=51852 says SAV Corporate Edition v9 went end of life on March 31, 2009.

It would be your best bet if you can even get it. I don't know if defnintions are being updated, though. If they are updated, I'm sure they're not being tested and they may not work with the older v9 engine.

It's also a pretty good bet that the AV engine is not going to protect you against all of the network-borne vulnerabilities in NT 4.

Hi, You are able to use also

Hi,

You are able to use also older version. The latest version of SAV that will support NT4 is 9.0.7 MR7, and at least it can be downloaded from platinum website. Unfortunately I don't know if it's available in fileconnect, but contact Symantec support if you cannot find it there or don't have platinum access.

Thanks, I was able to find an old serial number of ours and download 9.0.5.1000 from FileConnect.  Does anyone know if there's any way to manage these clients with SEPM, or would my best bet be to simply install them as unmanaged clients?

Re

I have an NT box before for a mail server, I think it's better for it to be unmanaged. And I dont think SEPM can manage it.

SAV clients and SEP managers

SAV 9.x clients can't be managed from the SEP manager.

What RAJP mentioned is worth noting. SAV 9.x may be able to use the definitions currently being published, but as it is EOL'd this is not something I'd recommend you do.

Hi,

If liveupdate ends for SAV 9.x, then you could just install SAV 10.x server to some machine to distribute definitions to 9.x clients through VDTM.

Dear Arrow, Even microsoft

Dear Arrow,

Even microsoft wont support you if you have any issues with NT4.

Pls upgrade wither to 2000 or 2003 and install SEP on them.

There are good features been added in SEP as compare to SAV 9.x

Rgrds,
SAM

Re

Hey, SAM is right, you will be encountering problems with your NT soon, better to upgrade to better machine, OS and AV. Just present a plan to your boss giving pros and cons..

Well, There are still NT 3.5

Well,

There are still NT 3.5 out there because some software run's only on that, so it would be hard to change to W2k8 and the same goes with NT4.

Unfortunately an OS upgrade

Unfortunately an OS upgrade is not an option for these servers; they're mostly in place for archive purposes.

Addtionally, I discovered one of them is running NT 4 SP 4, which rules out SAV 9, which requires SP 6.  Hopefully they'll be retired in the next coming months.

Thanks for your help everyone.
