SEP and WAAS

Our network presently includes 37 WAN connected remote sites and many other offices around state that are DSL connected. The aforementioned 37 WAN sites have a single server that functions as Domain Controller, Secondary SAV server, Altiris Package Server, etc.... Within the coming fiscal year ten of these sites will be pilots for a Cisco WAAS project and will have no server on site whatsoever. Supposedly all of these sites will be subject to a T1 data circuit upgrade prior to project kickoff (I'll believe that when I see it!!). So no server on site whatsoever. Coincidently, this will be occurring near the end or during my first production rollout of SEP. Hopefully this will be a SEP MR4 rollout. Anyone out there have any experience with this type of configuration or operation? Hope so!!! Thanx

Tommy - We are looking at

Tommy - We are looking at options of doing this also, would be interested to know whether this work for you or not. In our case we are just looking at the Altiris Package Server on the WAAS device.

As far as SEP goes, this

As far as SEP goes, this config worked flawlessly and I would have kept it this way if new and increased demands for network bandwidth had not arisen, ex;  Conversion from GroupWise to Exchange (over the network downloads), extreme GIS data demands, increased video conferencing installations, etc. The network activity from these apps in combination with clients downloading megabytes of SEP content daily over the WAN is a recipe for disaster.

Additionally, I am not sold on WAAS, it appears to be a half baked technology.  We are pulling them all back in and going back to remote site file and print servers.  All remote site servers are now configured as GUPs.  Anyplace that still has WAAS installed is a small traffic office without the big demands for bandwidth at this time.  These WAAS offices still pull all content down from our main office SEPM over the WAN and they work fine.  Get too much in the bandwidth mix and it definitely causes way too much heartache, IMO.
