SEP Client Deployment problem for client with Windows 7 RC1

  • 1.  SEP Client Deployment problem for client with Windows 7 RC1

    Posted Jul 29, 2009 10:18 AM

I know Windows 7 is not officially supported but I was hoping someone could figure out what is going wrong with the installation.

I'm able to push the client successfully from the server side (process is completed) and the Clt-Inst folder appears in the TEMP folder on the client computer.  I also notice that the Symantec Endpoint Protection folder appears on the Start Menu/Programs folder and the Symantec folder appears in the Program Files folder.  However, they never populate with files and disappear after a few seconds.

I've tried disabling UAC.   Turned off firewall.  I've run the SEP Support tool that is supposed to check the computer to see if anything would stop the installation from running properly and it came back fine.

Attached the log file below if that helps figure out what my problem is with getting SEP 11.0.4000.2295 installed.

There are no error or flied event in the SEP_Inst.log

There are not return Value 0
                                         Value 1
                                        Value 2
                                        Value 3

I was able to go through the installation (selected unmanaged, typical installation) and everything appeared to be installing but then it said Rolling back and undid everything.  Doesn't give any clue as to why.

Checked the log and found that

    LaunchConditions.
MSI (s) (04:8C) [10:03:33:460]: Product: Symantec Endpoint Protection -- Symantec Endpoint Protection has detected that there are pending system changes that require a reboot. Please reboot the system and rerun the installation.

Symantec Endpoint Protection has detected that there are pending system changes that require a reboot. Please reboot the system and rerun the installation.
Action ended 10:03:33: LaunchConditions. Return value 3.

Try rebooting the box or deleting this key

Open regedit and navigate to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\

Backup the PendingFileRenameOperations value then delete the multi_sz values. If there are any permissions issues then this will be highlighted.
Do not reboot, and try to install again.

if not  check the language setting on your machine, by default symantec uses English-US

    worth checking

I've already tried that registry change and it didn't work.  I've rebooted numerous times. Language settings is English-US.

Symantec support has a tool called Testsec.bat
that would help you to check permissions.
Do u have that with you?
    have you tried that too?

Found an article that talks about it but says you have to contact symantec tech support to get the file.

I wouldn't think permissions would be an issue.  I tried it on the local admin account and every other program installs fine.

Is your administrator account enabled ?
After you delete the PendingFileRenameOperations key from registry you do not have to restart your computer.
try installing again..if it fails then post that install log as that might give the exact reason of failure ( if its not PendingFileRenameOperations )

I tried it there and my account (which has admin rights) with no luck.  I've deleted the pendingfilerenameoptions and ran the install locally with unmanaged selected - same result.  I posted the log for that on the first post - SEP_INST2.doc (couldn't find any option to upload file on a reply).

I have seen many people using megaupload.com to upload log files..you can try that or..

open the log search for return value 3 and just copy the 10-15 lines above return value 3 and post it here.

Note the location will be different in Win7

    C:\Programdata\Symantec
    C:\program files\Symantec

    Delete these 2 folders

As the article Prachand originally posted implies you will need to install Liveupdate separately first before you will be able to install SEP on your Windows 7 box.

    Hope that helps!

I was able to install liveupdate 3.2.  now it's making me reboot again.

the Symantec folders never stayed so there's nothing to delete in step 1.

You were right, the liveupdate install was what I messed up on.
