SEP Client will not load on 2 of my SQL Servers

We have been doing a SEP 11 upgrade and for the most part we have worked through 3500 workstations and over 230 Servers.  But, and you knew there had to be a "but", I have 2 SQL servers that have me baffled.

One is a Win2000 Server and the other a 2003 Server.  Both run MS SQL and both are running on older DELL Server hardware.  They both were running version 10.1.6xxx of SAV but I've done a manual cleanup process to ensure that the old version is removed from all directories, registry and rebooted the servers multiple times.  Obviously I don't want to leave them vulnerable and I don't want to go back to SAV 10.

The error describes a "pending install has not completed."  You will need to reboot before attempting to install SEP client.  After you reboot, the install seems to be going along just fine, then it backs out of the install and returns us to the same error - Kind of an infinite loop.  The frustrating thing is there is no error to track down a solution.  I go to the event logs and get no help either.

Is there any way of determining what the problem is here?  I need to get this resolved as soon as possible, but short of rebuilding the 2 Servers I'm not sure of any alternative plan for resolution.

Can anyone help???

Hi

check this document

Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) 11 client installation fails with the message "Pending system changes that require a reboot have been detected
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2007121609023348

if the above one fails
open registry ( remember to back it up)
search for pendingfile
delete it
reboot the box and should work.

as per the above document you will find the pendingfilerename operations key on the right side of sessionsmanager.

I was aware of the Registry

I was aware of the Registry issue for "pending system changes" but the point is it fails first and then the error shows up.

If I clear the registry after it fails it just starts over and fails again

 Take a backup and delete

Take a backup and delete that key.Without rebooting run the install.Once the install completes successfully reboot then restore the regbackup.
If it fails go to start - run -%temp%\SEP_INST.log

Search for the first return value 3 and paste 10-15 line above return value 3 over here..

Is this OS set to some other language
 TRy this

To enable US-ASCII

In the Control Panel, choose Regional and Language Options.

On the Advanced tab, under "Code page conversion tables", check 20127 (US-ASCII) ON.

Click Ok.

the Regional and Lang.

the Regional and Lang. Options are set to English (US)

On the Adv. Tab the code page items are all checked (including 20127 (US-ascii)
- but that seems to be the case on all my servers.

Does not seem to be the problem.

What else might i try?

From what I read about this

From what I read about this it is one of 3 things:
1.  remove the pending reboot line in the registry
2.  make sure permissions are set on local machine - Do I need to copy the setup locally?
3.  Track errors through the sep_install.log for more clues

Any more ideas?  I'm going to submit this to our corporate support today unless i get anymore progress.

thanks

Hi

can  you try to install liveupdate first and then the install?
or try installaing as unmanged and then make it managed. Vikram resolved one such issues.
Give it a try lets see what we get.

When i tried to install

When i tried to install Liveupdate it gave me an install error 45:  Liveupdate failed to install due to an internal error.

I tried installing the unmanaged client on the other server and got a long error based on not findind a link to a dll file.  I'll try to get the actual error and record the screen shot.

Servers have been scanned and

Servers have been scanned and no threats were encountered.

I've noticed one other thing while trying to install; each time the installation reaches the part about creating install cache is when the errors occur.  Immediately following that part the error:

The procedure entry point RARReadHeaderEx could not be located in the dynamic link library unrar.dll

Occurs then the entire install rolls back.  This is consistent and reproduceable.

I've noticed also the temp folder in my user folder: c:\documents and settings\<my user>\local settings\temp

there are several tmp and other folders created each time i try the install but it does not seem to create the Symantec folder in Program Files before it fails.

Still looking for the possible solution to resolve these 2 problem children.

Wondering if anyone found a solution to the above issues... I have the same issues, including the Error 45 while trying to install LiveUpdate followed by the "Pending System Changes Require Reboot" issue.  Deleting registry keys doesn't help.  SEP 11.0.5, server is Windows Server 2003, client is Windows 7 Pro, clean install.

Did you work your way through

Did you work your way through the two articles posted above? You should consider making a new post if you are seeing this issue again, and then providing a link back to this on if it is relavent. This allows more control over the post and you can do things like post screenshots files and mark solutions as solved.

Cheers
Grant
