  • 1.  SEP Client won't install on Server 2008 R2 64bit machine

    Posted Nov 15, 2011 03:04 AM

    We have a Windows 2008 R2 64bit Server that we have just set up. Currently it has Backup Exec and System Recovery installed. We are trying to install the SEP client to the machine via remote push and as a installation package without any luck. The installation starts and runs and then just "finishes" without a prompt to restart the machine. When you search for the client it is not installed. In the event log it only states that msi installation has failed. There is also the following event:

    The description for Event ID 34 from source Symantec Endpoint Protection cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

    If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

    The following information was included with the event:

    SepMasterService

    the message resource is present but the message is not found in the string/message table

    Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Mark

    the log shows install failed with error code 1603, have you disabled UAC on the machine?

    Can you locally try to install SEP and let know if the issue is fixed?

    Also note if there is earklier version of symantec disable the tamper protection before upgrading.

    UAC is disabled yes and we have tried to install it locally too. It's not an upgrade but a completely clean install

    Hi,

    There is known issue for Server 2008 64 bit & windows 7 64 bit. If you are using SEP 11.x product.

    I will suggest try following steps & let me know.

    1. Open services.msc and go to properties of the "Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager" Service

    2. Click on the Logon tab and click on "This account"

    3. Enter the Administrator credentials

    4.Click on OK and restart the SEPM service

    5. Now login to the SEPM console and Deploy it using the "Find Unmanaged computers" .

    Hi Chetan,

    The problem is not SEPM but the client

    Hello,

    Here are the Observations:

    MSI (s) (40:E8) [07:44:33:901]: Invoking remote custom action. DLL: C:\Windows\Installer\MSIC3B0.tmp, Entrypoint: ShowServiceProgress
    ScriptGen: ShowServiceProgress() MSIRUNMODE_SCHEDULED
    ScriptGen: ShowServiceProgress() calling WaitForSingleObject(scriptStarted) ...
    ScriptGen: ShowServiceProgress() WaitForSingleObject(scriptStarted) returned WAIT_OBJECT_0
    ScriptGen: ShowServiceProgress() script execution failed.
    ScriptGen: ShowServiceProgress() reset script failure event.
    ScriptGen: ShowServiceProgress() is returning an error (so close to the end!)
    CustomAction ShowServiceProgress returned actual error code 1603 (note this may not be 100% accurate if translation happened inside sandbox)
    MSI (s) (40:38) [07:45:35:662]: User policy value 'DisableRollback' is 0
    MSI (s) (40:38) [07:45:35:662]: Machine policy value 'DisableRollback' is 0
    Action ended 07:45:35: InstallFinalize. Return value 3.

    MSI (s) (40:38) [07:47:58:922]: No System Restore sequence number for this installation.
    MSI (s) (40:38) [07:47:58:922]: Unlocking Server
    MSI (s) (40:38) [07:47:58:969]: PROPERTY CHANGE: Deleting UpdateStarted property. Its current value is '1'.
    Action ended 07:47:58: INSTALL. Return value 3.

    Hello,

    Try Creating a custom setting under the “Client Install Settings” options to not use “Add the program to the Start Menu”, leave this unchecked.

    OR / AND

    Deploy a client install package with "Remove all previous logs and policies, and reset the client-server communications settings".

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH165801

    If the install is successful, manually create the shortcut on the desktop that points SymCorpUI.exe.

    Hope that helps!!

    Hi,

    As per your comment " We are trying to install the SEP client to the machine via remote push and as a installation package without any luck"

    You are trying to deploy SEP client from SEPM (Server 2008 machine)  ?

    If yes, do the changes as suggested above & share the result.
