  • 1.  SEP client wont start after SEPM push deploy

    Posted Sep 28, 2015 12:30 AM

I have just installed a clean version of SEPM 12.1.5 (i can get exact version if required).  I have numerous Win 7 and Server 2008 clients that am trying to push out SEP to.

The SEPM manager is licensed and I have downloaded the latest jdb AV file and applied successfuly. This network is not connected to the internet and never will be, so there is no liveupdate for the SEPM.

The problem is occurs after I successfuly push SEP clients out to either Windows 7 or Server 2008.  After I logon to any of the client machines, I can see that SEP was installed, however it nevers starts.  I check the services on each machine and the SEP service is set to automatic, yet nothing happens.  When I try to start the service, it appears to start and then just as fast stops.  I can never get the SEP service to start and stay up, and therefore the clients never show up in the SEPM manager console.

All firewalls are turned off on all machines.  I even tried this entire operation using SEPM 12.1.6 with the same result.  Am I missing something that is required to get the SEP service to start on a client machine after a push deploy?  I have tried to identify if there are any log files that would indicate what is wrong, but have not found anything.

    Thanks for any assistance.

By default,SEP services is set to automatic, can you see the SEP icon in the system tray ? if not what is happening when you try to open SEP from the start menu ?

by any change if the SEP services are stopped , you need to run the command "smc start" from the run command window without quotes

Is there anything else installed on the system that would possibly stop the service from starting?

Have you tried turning on tamper protection on the group? See if that stops the client from being stopped.

Quickest check is to run the symhelp tool on one of those affected clients to see what is going on.

Thanks.  I ran Symhelp on the SEPM server and it came up with the following error regarding ports in use:

dbsrv16 listening on symantec port 2638

After some digging it seems like there is a known problem with installing SEPM on a 64bit OS using an embedded database.  I am only supporting 50 clients or less and therefore thought an embedded database was the way to go, but now I am thinking that a full SQL server 2008 R2 database might be easier to work with?

I saw the following page and tried the options listed and connected to the database using the 32bit ODBC connection, but this didn't fix anything.  I am not sure how to fix this and make SEPM work in the 64bit version of server 2008R2.  Maybe change the database port number?

I'll try this again with a standard SQL server install and see if that resolves it. If anyone knows how to fix the embedded database issue above, let me know and I'll try it.
