Can the SEP deployment tool do a rip and replace and be used to migrate SEP 12.1 RTM directly to SEP 12.1 RU1 MP1?

No.

You absolutely need to update from RU1.

RU1 is required for update before MP1 because MP1 is maintainace patch of RU1

only the SEP 12.1 RU1 version

Everyone, thank you for your replies. I already understood that you need RU1 to upgrade to RU1 MP1. But my question was can you do a rip and replace with the deployment tool?

To me, that sounds like, uninstall the current client (12.1 base) with the latest client version (12.1 RU1 MP1).

If you are not looking to upgrade the SEPM server immediately, but rather want only to update the clients (for whatever reason), I.E, they are standalone, than the answer is YES.

You can directly migrate from 12.1 to 12.1 RU1 MP1.

I haven't tried it myself, but according to this article from Symantec, you shoudl be able to.

To rip and replace a softwaer is to uninstall a software and reinstalling it with the same software or a different one.

You cannot do this with the SEP deployment tool or the auto-upgrade feature. Both of these tools are meant to only "upgrade" SEP. These tools cannot uninstall SEP, as you would want to do when going from RTM directly to MP1.
