  • 1.  SEP Firewall rules no longer allows iTunes to detect iPad over wifi

    Posted Sep 28, 2014 11:43 AM

    Hello,

Through this helfpul forum discussion, last year I was able to use firewall rules that allowed iTunes to detect my iPad over wifi: http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/iphone-wifi-sync-blocked-sep-firewall

But for some reason, the firewall rules that I created no longer allows iTunes to detect my iPad over wifi.

The four rules that I established last year allows traffic to and from ports UDP 5353 and TCP 3689 for each of the IP addresses that correspond to my iPad and the computer that has iTunes.

Those rules allowed for iTunes to detect my iPad--but only for a while. Not any more. I don't know if I need to allow traffic into and out of other ports (I've tried adding ports UDP 1900, TCP and UDP 123, and ICMP 3 through additional firewall rules, all to no avail.)

The ony way I can get iTunes to detect my iPad is by turning off SEP firewall protection. Obviously that is not a good, long-term solution.

If any knows of other ports that I should open, or other troubleshooting options, I would be grateful.

    Thank you.

Check your traffic log, should show what's being blocked...something may have changed on the apple side.

Thank you for your quick reply.  I'm attaching the log, which I can't really decipher. All I notice is that the last few twenty or so entryies show that traffic is block at port 5353, despite my "allow" rule. That puzzles me. Is there anything here that catches your eye?

An update: I've been struggling with this problem on and off for months, and then for some unexplained reason, iTunes suddenly began to recognize my iPad today. It's as though the "solution" to the problem was simply posting in this forum. Quite mysterious to me.

The only thing that I did between my last post and this one is that for my Firewall "allow" rules, I checked off "Record this traffic in the packet log." I don't see why that would make a difference. (And the check mark doesn't seem to persist after I close the rule.) I even deleted some of the new rules that I recently added (opening ports 1900 and 123 and ICMP 3), and iTunes still detected the iPad.

This is the first time it has worked in months. I wish I knew why. . . . .
