Hello all , I need to set up a GUP server that will facilate around 600-700 endpoints to server them definations. Please tell me what should be the specifcations i.e Hardware/Software for this server. This new GUP server machine will be dedicated only for the GUP server no other application/task will be done on this server. Please tell me the following points keeping into consideration that it iwll server 600-700 endpoints.

    1. What should be the Operating system
    2. How much RAM of this server
    3. How much processor
    4. How much Hard Disk

    Regards

James thanks for sharing the article but I want to know what is the best practice or what would you suggest in terms of resources to cater this requirement of serveing 600-700 endpoints ?

Other hardware/software limitations of the GUP:
Symantec has tested the GUP role on a variety of hardware and OS configurations and has found that the GUP role adds minimally to the CPU, memory and IO load on test systems. The load generated by the GUP role will increase based on the number of clients configured to update from the GUP, the amount of large delta or full content updates clients request, and the frequency at which definitions are updated in the environment.

Some basic guidelines for GUP hardware/software considerations are as follows:

    1. Ensure that the machine being used to serve as the GUP has sufficient reserves of CPU/memory capacity to allow for its normal operations to continue while serving content to clients
    2. By default, Windows is configured to allow a maximum of 5000 TCP connections simultaneously. With this configuration, the GUP is capable of serving 40 client connections per second.
    3. Windows can be configured to allow a maximum of 65534 TCP connections simultaneously. With this configuration, the GUP is capable of serving approximately 180 client connections per second.

No special system requirement.you are using it for 600 to 700 clients so always use Server OS for GUP .

    RAM - 2 G.B

Hard Disk Space base on how much content revisions do you have set in SEP GUP.

60-70 GB space maximum requirement. You can use 2ghz Processer.

In SEPM 12.1.5 Disk space requirement less then other SEPM version.

I am keeping 30 content revisions on SEPM how many should I keep on on GUP ?

You can 30-40 GB space maximum requirement,

in SEP 12.1.5 typical enterprise setup where 30 content revisions stored, the SEPM upgrade process must reduce 55GB of full content to under 2GB of delta content.

You cannot specify this. You can only limit the size of the cache folder (SharedUpdates) in the LiveUpdate policy.

If you have an environment with 32-bit and 64-bit OS, calculate 2 x 550 MB, plus size for delta files. The delta files are in most cases very small (100-500KB), however if a client was off for a longer period, it will get bigger delta files. So I think 2 GBs for the cache folder are sufficient.

Symantec's old default value of 500 MB is ridiculous because it's even smaller than one full content version.

Please read this enlightening thread (in particular SMLatCST's posts):

Operating System: Windows Server, running 24/7

Processor: Every modern processor should do it.

    RAM: 2 GB or more

    Outrageous.

    Is this a dedicated GUP?

    If so:

    • Windows 2008 or 2012
    • 4GB of RAM
    • Today's standard proc will work fine
    • 50GB min
