I'm not sure I can update to RU3 because I have to access the setup file from my university's IT website and there's no serial #, etc. I'll have to check with IT on Monday. I already tried the other two solutions, which don't seem to work. Windows update doesn't list KB2781197 in the installed updates for me. Maybe because the computer is too new?

You have try install SEP 12.1.2.This version are not supported windows 8.1.
SEP 12.1.4 are first version which are supported windows 8.1 and windows server 2012 R2.

You can download the 12.1.4 client setup from File Connect and install on the Window 8.1 System
Please install the latest version SEP 12.1.4 on Windows 8.1 which is the supported
