  • 1.  SEP Manager hangs creating client install packages

    Posted Mar 09, 2012 06:34 PM

I have just updated to 12.1 RU1 (from 12.1). The upgrade went rather smoothly. I had a minor catastrophe when I accidently set part of my "servers" group to a deployment configuration that rebooted when finished installing, so all of my 64-bit servers rebooted...DOH!

Other than that, it seems to be working fine, with one exception: When I try to deploy a new package and save it, the "wizard" hangs during the process. Not always, but on most packages it has. I have tried numerous things. I thought it might be having issues with Insight settings, so I completely disabled the SEP client and it seemed like it might have helped, but it's really hard to say for sure. I have set Full Control permissions to Everyone on the save directory, the temp directory and even the ClientPackages in the SEPM install directory (E:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\Inetpub\ClientPackages), but it doesn't seem to be helping.

I had one client group that would hang while creating the 32-bit package (never got to the 64-bit). I made some changes and it exported fine. Another group had no issues at all. I currently have a group that will get thru the 32-bit package okay, but then hangs on the 64-bit. Besides being in different groups, most of these packages are identical (the exception being my "Servers" group).

On the packages that have worked, it takes about 2 minutes total to make both packages (32 & 64-bit). However, when it hangs, it always hangs while creating the file Content.zip. If you watch the directory where the client package will ultimately be created, you can see it create numerous zip, ini & xml files. It will always pause for a short while when creating the Content.zip file, but when it works, it will resume creating files and eventually you end up with the setup.exe package.

The other problem I am having is if, instead of saving the package I do a remote push, it never goes anywhere. I only have a couple machines to push to (i.e. that don't already have SEP installed), so it's really hard to say exactly what the hang-up is, but the process hangs trying to push the client. I can get the machine authenticated, but when I click Send, it never gets past 0% on the deployment progress. I have let it sit for 20 minutes with no progress. When I push a pre-saved package, it takes about 20 seconds.

I'm not sure what to try next. I've looked at logs and there is nothing of significance (at least not in the Windows application & system event logs). I haven't tried a repair/reinstall of SEPM yet, mainly because it's Friday and I'm not going to spend my weekend here if things go south. That was going to be my next step, unless someone has other suggestions.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am also having the same issue, funny thing is it only happens on one of my SEPMs.  We have 2 SEPMs one for workstartions and one for servers.  They are in different locations.  The workstation SEPM is on a 2 computer SAN and exports packages fine.  The server SEPM is on a 8 computer SAN (both running VMare).  It does the same thing just hangs creating packages.
