SEP network browse problem

  • 1.  SEP network browse problem

    Hi,

Recently installed a new SEP12 server and through all the config bits I think I have somehow entered some details in slightly wrong somewhere. When I try and use the client deployment wizard and it gets to the part where it should provide you a list of machines on the network I get an error that says "Login failure :unknown username and password.

I've looked in the obvious places I can think that this password could be stored and I'm assuming I've misspelt something on setup but when I try and repair/change the setup I don't get asked to enter any details so I'm not sure where to go from to try and get this fixed.

    Any ideas?

This is not the SEPM / SEP related password. You should provide your windows domain admin password so that SEP can query the services.msc on the remote computer  to see if SEP is installed or not or wmi to see the if the OS is 32 or 64 bit. Please provide your Domain admin Id and password that should fix the issue.

You dont have to set it anywhere. It will prompt you for ID and password

    1.
    2. In the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager console, click the Home tab at left.

    3. On the Home page, in the Common Tasks menu at upper-right, select Install protection client to computers. The Client Deployment wizard starts.

    4. In the Welcome to the Client Deployment Wizard pane, choose "New Package Deployment" and click Next.

    5. Select the client version, the feature set, the client group and content options, and then click Next.

    6. Click Remote Push, and then click Next.

    7. Locate the computers to receive the client software, and then click >> to add the computers to the list. To browse the network for computers, click Browse Network. To find computers by IP address or computer name, click Search Network, and then click Find Computers. Authenticate with the domain or workgroup if prompted. Note: You can set a timeout value to constrain the amount of time the server applies to a search. Click Next.

    8. Click Send to push the client software to the selected computers. Wait while the client software is pushed to the selected computers.

    9. Click Finish.

    Hi Rafeeq,

Sorry might be a bit of a miscommunication on my behalf. It's actually at the end of step 6 where it should provide a list of computers that i get the error.

I've attached an image so you can see the step I am on about.

Thanks for the assistance so far.

Hi Rafeeq, It is on windows 2008. I've already started the computer browser servcie. I've retried after putting the details you suggest in there.

Still not working. Just tried the web client from a seperate machine and still the same. I think I must have put the wrong details in at setup somewhere, just don't really want to uninstall it all to find out!

    Thanks again for the ideas!

Re-installed and checked again. Still failing.

If I do a manual search via IP address it finds machines and I can install, but still has the error on the browse network part of the program. Any more ideas?

Perhaps you should check one of the target clients with the SymHelp tool. You get it over the Help menu of the SEPM console (Help > Download Symantec Help Tool) or the following site:

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH170752

It's able to check the prerequisites of a client install. For example, it will detect if necessary ports (139, 445) are blocked.

Hi, The problem isn't that it can't get to the clients. If I choose the other option and scan via IP i can get machines listed and can deploy. The issue seems to be the "browse network computers" option that I would think should give me the full list of machines that I currently have if i browse the network on the server.

There is no such password to configure..Does it happen if you right click on SEPM console icon and select Run as admin?

Yep. I've tried running as admin. Still the same. I've checked everything i can think off after browsing lots of the other errors that people have registered on here with similar issues -

    Firewall off.

    Computer browser enabled

    services restarted.

tried logging on as a different admin user (created as domain credentials to test).

tried logging onto machine as a different admin user.

I've upped some of the logging and I now can see it saying

"make sure the broser service is running" So I think it must be something related to 2win2008 server not showing computer browser properly.

Lets make the startup type as automatic, start it , repair sepm just to register things. reboot and try again.

    Hi Rafeeq,

Yep, ran the helper tool. Came through saying everything was OK. Still have the same issue. Restarted the server again just to be on the safe side. Still does it.

I'm not sure where its getting the info that CB service is not started. All the dependency service wrt to CB is also started?

I'm running out of ideas :) This would be my last try

    Hi Rafeeq,

If i try that method I get to the bit where you can see the two options for networks... and if I click the + next to microsft windows network it doesn't actually expand and does nothing. I'm assuming this is the same error.

Not to worry - thanks for your help - I will have to add them manually via IP instead of the browsing method.
