SEP Recover
Updated: 23 May 2010 | 3 comments
Hello All,
I am making a disaster recovery plan for my SEP Manager. In case of loosing my server, what should I do to prevent and recovery the system. So I would like to open a discussion about this.
How many times should I backup the database? Once a week? Via backup software or via SEP M tool?
What files and folders should I backup?
The replace server must have the same hostname?
The replace server mus have the same IP adress?
The replace server must have the same sizing?
Theese are some point that come in my mind right now, if you have any other idea please lets discuss.
Thanks and have a nice day

CEZAR,
In response to your questions;
How many times should I backup the database? Once a week? Via backup software or via SEPM tool?
* Is this the embedded database or an external SQL instance?
-If this is the embedded database then the built in tool for backing up the database will suffise.
This can be found on the server that contains SEPM under the following location using your start menu;
Programs\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\Database Bacup and Restore
-If an external SQL solution then using something like "Veritas" or your preferred solution
Generaly you will NOT have to keep backing this up unless you are constantly making changes!
What files and folders should I backup?
- In terms of the files that you need to backup, you will obviously need the whole of the "Symantec" directory.
There are also registry keys that need backing up which can be found on Symantec's knowledge base.
The replace server must have the same hostname?
-Yes the replacement server must have the same hostname if you are going to recover
The replace server mus have the same IP address?
- Also yes it must have the same IP address assignment
The replace server must have the same sizing?
- At least the same capacity as the server before or more!
**** Alternatively if you dont want to have to go though all of these steps in a recovery, then just purchase "Backup Exec System Recovery" (BESR). As this will take a complete image of your server including operating system, patches & SEPM including all of the policies etc...... Once this image has been created then it can be restored in about 10 minutes - (even to dissimilliar hardware!)
I hope this helps?
Many Thanks for the answer!
Just a last doubt, in my case we use a External database (SQL). What tables should I backup?
Regards,
Cezar
Hi, One method to have safe @ mind is use BESR (backup exec system recovery) software. you can take image of your machine to a external storage media. In a case of a server failure it'll be matter of less than one hour your AV server can be run on diffrent server or under virtual enviroment. Anyway for this solution $$ involves. But you can do the math of price and the downtime for that. just my 2 cents idea
