SEP SBE 12.0 and Few Questions for Windows 7
Hello,
I am giving the SEP SBE 12.0 trial a test run as we liked what was done with NIS 2009 and now the NIS 2010. I know that they are seperate products but one can always hope that advances made in one product find their way into the other. We have many customers that have SBS environments and they range in the 3-15 pc's per site, so I see that this product would be ideal in these environment. I am also asked to install and verify that the products work the way they should. Having said that, I have installed the trial on a test SBS 2003 with a few clients and must say I like what I see, except for a couple of things.
1- How long after Windows 7 is released will the product fully support Windows 7? Some of my customers are just waiting for the release of Windows 7 to change their slow and aging computers, so SEP 12.0 needs to support this asap.
2- I have installed this on Windows 7 x64 and the Network Threat Protection is missing from the main GUI even though in the Symantec Protection Center it shows as installed and active. I have verified the service for the Network Threat Protection, it is on manual instead of automatic, even if changing to automatic, after I reboot it goes back to manual. Is this a Windows 7 support thing or x64, I don't have a Vista x64 to verify this.
3- Will right-click scanning be supported for x64 in Windows 7 once released? It is not there right now.
4- The clients can disable the endpoint protection if right-clicking on the icon and selecting disable protection, even though all the padlocks show as locked. They can even uninstall the software without so much as being prompted for a password, any changes coming for this?
Thanks for any replies, as soon as I have any other question I will post here.
Michael

Thanks Thomas.
Just to clarify point #3, they cannot change the configuration as they are greyed out but they can disable the protection and uninstall the product through add\remove.

[Answer] We are expecting SEP SBE 12.0 to support Windows 7 by Oct of this year. This will be available in time with Windows 7 launch.
2- I have installed this on Windows 7 x64 and the Network Threat Protection is missing from the main GUI even though in the Symantec Protection Center it shows as installed and active. [Answer] Must be a windows 7 thing. SEP SBE 12.0 does not support windows 7. SEP SBE 12.0.1 will be released in Oct and that will work and show all components correctly.
3- Will right-click scanning be supported for x64 in Windows 7 once released? It is not there right now.
[Answer] This capability is on roadmap and is being assessed for a release next year.
4- The clients can disable the endpoint protection if right-clicking on the icon and selecting disable protection, even though all the padlocks show as locked. They can even uninstall the software without so much as being prompted for a password, any changes coming for this?
[Answer] Its on the roadmap but its too early for us to share any timelines. Once you lock the Antivirus & Antispyware through pad lock -although you can click right click and select Disable Protection the technologies that have been locked cannot be disabled.
Hope that helps.

Hi Nimesh,
Thank you for the answers, although 1, 2, and 4 were the most important, I can live with #3 for now, it is not a show stopper. I'll have to test #4 by disabling the protection and trying to run eicar or something to see if it is indeed stopped. Thank you once again.

one quick note:
just my 2 cents, but i represent another (independent small biz) shop who is ditching Trend Micro after 6 years for ONE reason: Dekstop NAV 2009 knocked my socks off.
I have been Anti-Norton BLOATWARE for 6 years and it looks like you guys have finally gotten your act together at the desktop level. i just tried a free copy i got with my new ASUS core i7 motherboard and was blown away. i'd sworn off NIS for life prior to that. i cannot COUNT the number of machines i have 'fixed' over the years and the thousands of dollars people have spent with me simply by my saying "uninstall NIS".
i liked NAV09 so much, i purchased $3000 worth of Symantec booty for my biggest client, usurping the long standing TM relationship, which i saw as the only other choice until now. i hope the server version does not disappoint. looks pretty "HEFTY" so far, but i will not have it installed before the end of the day.
This is just one data point you can send to your marketing guys.
The bottom line is that a bloated software firewall and IDS which breaks half the functionality of an otherwise healthy desktop should not be installed by default when someone is just looking for basic AntiVirus and spyware protection.
Nowadays, everybody's grandmother has a linksys in their house and the Windows firewall turned on by default anyhow so the I - S of NIS becomes much less of a value add.
Another question
Is there a place on the Symantec website that shows what the current release version is at? I've been trying to search many places but have yet to find it, I just want to make sure that if there is a release to the product that my version is getting the update.
Thanks
Michael

Is there a date when the new update to support Windows 7 will be released? We were told in a previous post that an update will be made in time for the release of Windows 7.
Thanks
