Can SEP Small Business 12.1 be installed on a stand alone 2008 R2 strictly as AV with the minimum of other features and if so, what is the best way to accomplish this?

you can use the unmnaged client on this machine. If you install using the CD the client is unmanaged one.

I know these are lame

I know these are lame questions. Its just that the app has many features, and I dont want to have too worry about seperating what I need from what I dont, installing/uninstalling/generally mucking up the registry etc. A straightforward/simple job so I can save my energy for wrestling with making a 2003 GPO work on R2 smiley

Use Basic Server Feature Set

After installing SEPM, deploy to clients as such:

From Home, click dropdown box in upper right and select "Install Protection Client to Computers".

Select New Package Deployment on next screen.

Select "Servers - Basic Protection" in Install Feature Sets field.

Select Remote Push on next screen.

Select all network machines you want this installed on and deploy.  This will only install the virus and spyware protection module.

Hope this helps!
