  • 1.  SEP system scan failure

On an XP system, I recently uninstalled Norton Internet Security using the Norton Removal Tool and installed SEP. SEP was installed from the msi file after some problems running setup.exe. All indications are that the install was successful, but when I try to run a system scan, I get at message that "Symantec Antivirus has encountered a problem and needs to close". It is the standard message offering to tell Microsoft about the problem. Any suggestions on what might be causing this and a fix would be appreciated.

    Remove SEP

    Then delete the following directories:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\SymantecShared

    C:\Program Files\Symantec

    And delete these registry entries:

    HKLM -- Software --Symantec

    HKCU --Software -- Symantec

Then re-install SEP and run a scan and see what happens

Do I need to restart after the registry changes and then perform the install again ?

No you only need to restart after uninstalling SEP however I still restart after removing reg entries just to be safe :-)

Restart the machine and try repairing the SEP install

    go to Add/Remove Program--Symantec Endpoint Protection--Change-Repair--Install.

    Reboot again
