SEP upgrade licensing question

Created: 15 Nov 2012 | 8 comments

We had Version 11.0.6200 and we just purchased an upgrade to 12.1 RU1 MP1 and I have been through the upgrade paths and this is what I have to ask.

I have already upgraded our production server to the 12.1 RU1 but I have not upgraded any clients yet.  The server is still running on the trial.  Do I need to go ahead and activate/install the upgrade license now before I do any clients, or do I go ahead and deploy the clients and then wait until I upgrade the 2nd time to 12.1 RU1MP1 to activate/install the license?  I am not too clear on how that works.

Activate the license before doing the client installs. Otherwise it will complain about being overdeployed.

What will happen to that license when I do the final upgrade to 12.1 RU1 MP1?  Will I have to re-enter and activate again?

The upgrade will make note of it and carry it over. I just upgraded to RU2 and everything was carried over, licenses included.

Just as an fyi, you can few all licensing here:

There are a bunch of links inside that should help as well.

Thanks for the info.  The license for our 11.x server was not expired yet but when I upgraded to 12.1 RU1 it says that I am using a trial. I didn't know if it would do that again when I did the final upgrade.

why not activate the licenses if you have and then upgrade the SEPM to 12.1 ru1 mp1 and clients to the same version.

By the way SEP 12 Ru2 will be available in next couple of days .

Once you input the license file, the trial piece of it should go away. At least that is how it worked for me on our initial 12.1 upgrade. License has carried over with each upgrade and no "trial" message.

Hi,

Q. The license for our 11.x server was not expired yet but when I upgraded to 12.1 RU1 it says that I am using a trial.

Ans: Because SEP 11.x licensing is basically just a "paper" license product.  However, with SEP 12.1 the licensing is a "software" license product and uses a license file.

In SEP 12.1 you will have to install trial product first then activate the license.Even in upgrade process it will upgrade to the trial version first then after entering license file it would become license product.

I didn't know if it would do that again when I did the final upgrade.

--> No, once you activated SEP 12.1 license it will remain activated in future upgrades.

You can now directly upgrade to SEP 12.1 RU2, no need to upgrade to SEP 12.1 RU1 MP1.
