SEP upgrade on server - reboot required?
Created: 07 Dec 2012 | Updated: 11 Dec 2012 | 10 comments
Hello,
In SEP 11 there was no need for server to be rebooted when SEP client on it is upgraded (with only AV/AS installed).
However we noticed (and also saw that Symantec engineer tested and confirmed the same in another forum discussion here) that upgrade from 12.1 RU1 MP1 to 12.1 RU2 on a server shows on the SEP interface that reboot is required. Is this some bug or it will work like this in SEP 12 because in environment with many servers it will be not so easy for rebooting etc?

Hello,
This could be due to certain kernel file changes in Autoprotect of SEP 12.1 RU2.
It's a best practice to reboot after unisntall/reinstalling software, again it's going to depend on the system state and could require a reboot, basically if it prompts to be rebooted then it should be rebooted.

I agree with Mithun, when you are prompted for reboot, then you should reboot it as some features will get active.

HI
select the No reboot deployment so that it can be done later by the user when they logged off.
I would suggest to get an official KB that confirm this from Symantec Engineer/Backline Team.
Understand that environment always an issue to reboot a server (production, critical servers etc)
The option "No reboot" was selected and also we are not doing Uninstall/Reinstall but just an upgrade from 12.1 RU1 MP1 to 12.1 RU2. We just upgraded another server and it shows again that restart is required. Also on the SEP client interface it still shows the old 12.1 RU1 MP1 version which is updated after the reboot. Attached is the screenshot.
And as I said, in SEP 11 there was no need for reboot when upgrading SEP on server with AV/AS only. What has changed in SEP 12?
As cus000 suggested, it will be good if Symantec confirm this because rebooting servers in large environment will not be so easy.
Hello, is there any update on this, any official statement from Symantec?
that setting means that SEP will not automatically restart the machine, but if restart is required it will show up in the console.thats what its showing up in your console

Yes I know it, but the question is why it is asking for reboot when only the AV part is used and upgrade is done from 12.1 RU1 MP1 to 12.1 RU2? NTP is not used here
There are few components in this version which will be installed on reboots. Hence requires a reboot.
