  • 1.  SEP v12.0 Small Business: Intel services won't start

    Posted Aug 16, 2009 05:53 PM
SBS2003 R2 domain. Norton Corp was on SBS w2003 server. New SEP V12.0 is now installed on new Windows 2008 x64 server and clients deployed to all 20 workstations and SBS2003 server and old W2003SP2 Line of Business server. Intel Alert Handler, Originator, file transfer and PDS services won't start. This SBS2003 used to have AMS installed but was uninstalled with V10 before new V12 on w2008 server.
Is there a tool to remove all of old V10 install including AMS or a checklist? need to get services up on SBS2003 soon. Thanks.

Are you seeing Windows event errors? Are you running a SEP 12 client on the server? If so, what features are you running?  Let start trouble shooting using the SEP support tool. Click on the help button and download the tool. Run the tool and report back all errors that come up.

The tool can also be downloaded from - http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2008071709480648

    Cheers,

Thanks for info. Ran SEP tool on Windows 2008 server and got only one error: Secars communications failed to following: it showed the Windows 2008 server that the runs the console. A manual http://w2008:8014 works. The tool showed the correct IP and resolved names and said no DNS errors.
Ran tool on old SBS2003 server that had been SYm V10 console and AMS server. No errors at all on tool.
The SBS2003 server shows four services stopped and each fails when restarted with error 1053. I have seen in these forums a like error but a very long resolution.

    Check out this MS KB:

You receive an "Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion" error message when you stop or pause a managed Windows service -

Thanks for comment. .Net already latest version. Error only started immediatley after AMS removed and V12 client installed. Believe this not the issue.

    Read this KB:

Manually uninstalling AMS server for Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 9.x from Windows NT/2000/XP/2003,

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2004040615394148?Open&docid=2002031914291648&nsf=ent-security.nsf&view=docid

Try this procedure and then see if the services start.

Symantec Support...I think that the Forum is a good place to get people to talk ane resolve your issues, but in the meantime, BUSINESS NETWORKS ARE NOT BEING PROTECTED.  Is there a Forum Post made by SYMANTEC that states:  you must go into the registry of every client and server and remove ALL "savmain" files and ALL "symantec" entries other than the 'legacy symantec' entries...or would this be too risky for novice administrators?  People should know that ALL instances of SAVCE and SEP v11 will totally screw up v12 and vice versa and the v12 works like a trojan on steroids with a footprint larger than jupiter not to mention it will slow down your clients at a minimum of 30% which makes it look like its your network.  Good Grief what a fiasco!!!
