SEP V12.1.3 Restart

  • 1.  SEP V12.1.3 Restart

I am testing the SEP v12 client, and so far evey upgrade has required a reboot.  Is it mandatory to reboot the computer when upgrading from SEP 11 to SEP12?

    Yes it is mandatory.

11.x and 12.1 are different products essentially so a reboot will be needed every time when doing an upgrade from 11.x to 12.1

Reboot will be required as because of the different architecture of both versions - some reference here:

    Hello,

The SEP 11.x to 12.1 upgrade will need a reboot.

SEP 12.1 employs a side-by-side, replace on reboot installation strategy. Side-by-side means that new files are written to a new folder, referred to as a silo, isolated from the existing operational folder. Because the two versions are separated from each other, during a migration the older software is left running unchanged until the next reboot.

The primary benefit of side-by-side installation and replace on reboot is that the system continues to be protected by the existing software until the new version is in operation after the reboot.

(Nice-to-have feature to deal with short maintenance windows)  Note that this then necessitates that the system has to be rebooted before trying another upgrade.

Note that in all cases, you can create the package to not force or even prompt for a reboot.

This technique enables you to change the normal portion of the installation path during a migration, when applicable.

    Mithun,

Thanks for the detailed write-up.  I have a question regarding the reboot prompt.  You indicated that "in all cases, you can create the package to not force or even prompt for a reboot."

Would you be able to direct me to this setting?  I have found a setting that will suppress restarts and restart notifications for virus mitigation, but I must have overlooked the setting that applies to a reboot after upgrade.

    Thanks.

In the SEPM, go to Admin >> Install Packages >> Client Install Settings and edit your install package. Select the Restart Settings tab and edit here
