    Good Morning

I would like to query on how Symantec holds the Virus Deifnition files

What i notice is on my servers the following locations have exactly the same content, therefore duplicating the same file sizes, surely this is not normal behaviour, i would expect the defs to download to one area and then update in another area. Both locations are updated the same time

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\CurrentVersion\Data\Definitions\VirusDefs\

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\12.1.3001.165.105\Data\Definitions\VirusDefs\

I use SEPM to manage my fleet of terminals and i am wondering if there is something not set correctly

    Any advice is much appreciated

    Kind Regards

    Barrie

The "Current Version" folder is a junction to the folder named after the actual version number.

This is not a duplicate, it is the same folder.

If you want to verify, you can download the Windows Junction tool and check.

Please see my response to the same question from way back when smiley:

    Hi

Many thanks for claification, at least i wont need to panic if i think there are duplicates lying around.

Can you advise if the directories listed are the only ones where the definition files are kept / sorted out, basically i want to make sure there anre no hidden areas where space could accumulate over time

May vary on OS (xp vs.win7) but those look to be correct

IIRC, that appdata folder is it for definitions in 12.1.*.  It is different for SEP11 though, so if you have any of those then you may want to check out the below article too:
