SEP On Windows Server 2008
Updated: 21 May 2010 | 23 comments
Hi,
Windows 2008 went gold yesterday and I have been asked to find out what version of SEP if any are compatible with it? Also is SAV11 compatible with it?
Thanks,
- Dustin

Support for Windows Server 2008 Standard/Enterprise/Datacenter/Web (32-bit or x64 edition), including Server Core installation, has been added to the Symantec Endpoint Protection and Symantec Network Access Control clients. Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager and the deployment tools have also been modified to support the management of Symantec Endpoint Protection and Symantec Network Access Control clients that run on Windows Server 2008. However, the management components cannot be installed on a computer running Windows Server 2008.
De facto when AV does something, it starts jumping up and down, waving its arms, and shouting "Hey! I found a virus! Look at me! I'm soooo goooood!"
I was on the phone with tech suppor this morning... STILL As of today 07-31-2008, Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (MR2, MP1, version 11.0.2010) will not work on Server 2008. That is the Manager will not install. They say that we can install the enpoint virus protection but not the manager portion. Will have to install on each of the 50 computers or use an older server version to be the manager. Sucks to be a Server 2008 administrator with Symantec.
Here we are almost 4 Months after the last post, MR3 has been out for a few weeks and yet still no Management Console.
Looks like I'll have to find a new Antivirus Vendor. What workstation do you have on your network that has the minimum requirements to run the MC? Let alone isnt doing anything else!
Management Console
Processor
Hard Disk
Just my 2 cents I could be wrong!
Hi,
I'm currently running Panda for Enterprise on about 200 Clients, my licenses are about to expire. Since I'm migrating to Server 2008 these days, I was looking for a new AV solution. Because Panda Console doesn't work on Server 2008.
I have Symantec NIS running at home and I'm very statisfied with it. So I just downloaded SEP trial version for testing purpose. I'm really supprised the managment console is not certified for Server 2008 yet. Market Leader, huh? :)
.....just my 2 cent
Its fantastic.. Windows Server 2008 has been out for, what, 8-9 months?
As someone said before, it suck to be 2008 Administrator with license for Symantec right now.
Had i known this when we upgraded i'll never done it!
Sorry to be the pain, but I need to ask if there's been any progress in getting SEP to run on 2008. I'm sure this is a huge task and they are working diligently on a fix. However, life must move on for administrators that work under time/budget constraints. Just curious....
Thanks.
I believe that you're referring to SEPM support on Win2K8 (since the SEP client currently is supported on Win2K8).....if so, SEPM support for Win2K8 is planned for MR4, due out in December 2008.
I've just performed an install of SEPM MR4 on a new SBS 2008 server, and the good news is the product DOES install now. The bad news is none of my SEP clients show up, and on the PCs, none of them indicate that they are talking to the server. I was able to deploy the clients from the new server using the deployment & migration wizard. I tried a search for unmanaged clients from within SEPM, and was able to find all clients, and re-pushed out the installation. All were marked as successful, but still no actuall Management/client communication appears to be taking place.
Documentation is virtually non-existant as MR4 is not officially released until Jan 6th, but it's already available on Fileconnect.
I would love it if anyone else runs into this problem and finds a fix.
ok, its a new SBS server, did you deploy MR4 over already deployed clients?
On the SEPM, is the windows firewall enabled?

Thanks for the speedy reply, Paul,
No, the clients were all running another vendor's AV software which was uninstalled from each machine first.
Yes, the SEPM server has the Windows FW turned on. Last time I tried to turn it off (which is my preference anyway), I lost all connectivity with the server.
make sure you have local port 8014 (assuming thats the port you specified during install) allowed through the windows firewall, otherwise the SEP clients wont be able to talk to the server.

Thanks Paul, that did the trick!! Now off to another client where I've been running SEPM in a 2003 VM, to migrate it to the host O/S where I wanted it in the first place. :)
no problem, I'm going to try and get that into MR4 MP1, we should automatically create the exception

is the EndPoint for Windows 2008 released now or not yet?
can I have the download link please?
Jassim,
If you read the rest of the thread you will find that yes, SEP MR4 installs and runs quite nicely on Server 2008, and Small BUsiness Server 2008. I now have several of my clients running it.
You can download the latest version from http://fileconnect.symantec.com
Do not worry if the first product link says 11.02, when you get to teh actual download link it will be 11.04
Jamie
If you look in the MS newsgroups, many of us are experiencing the sudden loss of network shares due to SEP. It seems to happen between a week or two of continuous uptime.
THis is Symantecs previous response it was supposed to be fixed in MR3 - still an issue with MR3
1. Install only the SEP Core AntiVirus services on Server 2008.
2. Uncheck Drive Scanning
3. Add Centralized Exceptions to disable AutoProtect on all shares on the
2008 Server.
4. Setup manual scans to run a few times throughout the day to run a full
system scan.
