  • 1.  SEP/Liveupdate freezes machine

Hi, I have seen some similar issues on the discussion board to the problem I'm facing, but nothing exactly the same.  If anyone has any suggestions on how to resolve this problem, it would be much appreciated.

    Problem:

My system completely freezes whenever Liveupdate enters the running state.  The running state last about 5-10 minutes.  No errors are reported, just noticed that the freezing corresponds with Liveupdate activity.  This occurs every 3-4 hours or whenever my laptop wakes up after an activity lapse.

    Things tried:

    Removing SEP and reinstalling.

I'm using SEP:  version 11.0.4014.26, LU version 3.3

    System Specs:

    Dell Precision M6400
    Windows XP 64 Pro.
    Quad core processor
    8 GB RAM
    T1 Internet Connection

The only solution I've found is to disable SEP and LU when I'm working, but somehow LU ultimately forces itself back on.  While this sort-of-works, its time consuming and annoying.

I've been dealing with this problem for months now and it is really cutting into my programming productivity.

    Anyone experiencing similar problems?

    Thanks,

    Tim

    Hi tim,
can you tell me the service pack that you are using on your laptop? If it is SP3 then it might cause some problems, and also let me know the antivirus and antispyware definition dates that are showing on your SEP, and also the features of SEP that are installed in your laptop.

Check if you are able to visit any security sites.

Un-installing and re-installing is the option available.

You've already tried reinstalling. And LiveUpdate takes up too much resources. Does this mean that the CPU goes up near 100% usage?
I also can't really see how SEP could use up all your RAM and you have no problem with bandwidth (lucky you!).

Are you using Vista? and have you tried searching for updates/patches for the SEP and Windows? And what's the current setup. Do you get updates to the internet or from a company server or both? And what is the settings for Liveupdate.

Oh yeah, Vista has some problems with softwares when it goes into hybernation and the disks shut down. I had this problem with a laptop before with different softwares. If this is the case, try adjusting the Power Saver settings to not shut down the hard drives and observe for a few days. Haven't used Vista in a while to confirm this. They could already have this fixed.
