SEPM 11.x no longer functions

  • 1.  SEPM 11.x no longer functions

    Posted Jan 20, 2015 04:00 PM

I have inherited a very old installation of SEPM 11.x (11.0.7). It was working well enough until a power outage and at that point SEPM console would no longer launch and Live Update no longer worked on the SEP server. None of the clients are able to download updates because they're supposed to get it from the SEPM server.

I tried a repair already, that failed with a fatal error. Database backup also fails to run.

What's the best place to start to repair or fix this issue. Which logs would I review for errors? Would a clean install be the best option?

SEP 11.x is end of support life and definitions have been stopped for it. You need to get to 12.1 as soon as possible.

I'm aware of the end of life status. To purchase 12.1.x may take us 3 or more months so our option is to try and fix 11,x or do nothing while we wait. Doing nothing is not an acceptable solution.

Thats the only way as of now.. how many clients are reporting/reported to SEPM? if they are less then a fresh install would be easlier, as you will move to 12.x anyways. but I doubt if your SEPM will get any liveudpate

possible to post the scm-server0.log? would like to check why your SEPM is not launching..

In regards to the LiveUpdate issue, 11.x SEPM and clients stopped receiving definitions as of January 5th, 2015. There is no fix for this.

It is possible for 11.x clients to receive untested definitions from a 12.1 SEPM but it doesn't sound like this is even an option either.

You can call Symantec to see if they offer anything else. In the past, when products went end of life, they would continue to put out definitions for customers who had an agreement. Was not cheap though.

For the console not launching, enable FINEST debugging and reproduce the issue, post the scm-server-0.log file

    Hi,

Thank you for posting in Symantec community.

I would be glad to answer your query.

On January 5th, 2015, Symantec Endpoint Protection version 11.0.x will reach end of support life. Virus definitions and security updates will cease to be published to LiveUpdate and general support for the product will no longer be provided.

The initial end of support life date was originally scheduled for January 5th, 2014. All customers were provided a complimentary extention. No further extentions will be provided.

It's strongly recommended to upgrade to SEP 12.1 , RU5 is the latest release.

Consult with your partner/reseller to get 12.1.

To know the best practice I would recommend to go through the following article.

    https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/sep-11x-sep-121-upgrade-process-graphical-overview

Important note: The SEP 12.1 SEPM upgrade installer requires three times the current database size (sem5.db) if upgrading from pre-12.1 SEPM with the embedded database only.

Also, check this article as well.

We went ahead and did the upgrade to 12.1.5 overnight. It seemed to go well but now whenever I do anything inside of the management console, the application just hangs. I can move around the management console just fine right after it is opened but if I try to change a setting or click on certain buttons the application will just sit there locked. I can't do anything with it and have to shut it down and restart.

The console on the SEPM itself or are you using the remote or web console? Does it continue even after a restart?

    Restart should fix it

If it's happening after each login then repair the SEPM through add/remove programs.

@Brian, the console on the SEPM server itself. Not using the web client or remote client.

Restarting the server is usually the only way to get it back and functioning but I have been able to at least do a few things without it locking up so for now I just won't click on anything I don't need to or change any settings. My guess is that although the upgrade went well there's an underlying issue that is triggered when changes to the config are made.
