SEPM 12.1 License Question & General Upgrade Observations?

Hi, we are looking to upgrade from 11.x > 12.1.

when ti comes to the license, can yu tell me if this is the same type of license as 11.5?  I have read that the licnese must cover the amount of managed clients (which it rightly should).

is there now some kind of licesning service that now keeps check of the clients or is it the same mechanism as 11.5 (i.e add license) - just trying tio see if we need to script some kind of purge activity for old clients that still show up in the databsse.

Lastely, any tips or experience from people here who have upgraded?  I have read the KB article, but be good to see if anyone else at an enterpirse hit any unexpected problems or fine it straight forward?

Thaks in advance.

Quick Look Solution

Almost!

As long as you're using the the Enterprise edition, SEP12.1 will not stop you from getting updates, even if you're overdeployed.  This blocking of defs only happens on the small business edition.

With the Enterprise Edition, when over deployed you will get nagged frequently to sort your licenses out, and your SEP clients will be blocked from uploading reputation information to Insight, but that's about it.

On another note, it's probably worthwhile reviewing the below article on known issues with SEP12.1:

Lastly, it's always appreciated if you could give a "Thumbs Up" to any posts you find useful, and mark the Solution when you have it.  Cheers!

You would not require teh same licenses as version 11.0

First you would have to download the 12.1 software and then upgrade on the existing 11.0 version.

In 11.0.5 Licensing Concept was different , in 12.1 you need to download the Slf ie license file and then update it In the manager , multiple ways to update it .

2)is there now some kind of licesning service that now keeps check of the clients or is it the same mechanism as 11.5 (i.e add license) - just trying tio see if we need to script some kind of purge activity for old clients that still show up in the databsse.

For additional Licenses you have to Purchase them from Symantec Sales team .Alternatively if you think there are machine no longer in your network but are occupying License you need to delete them from Sepm',if your Sepm is integrated with AD then remove the machine entry from AD which is Intergrated .

3)Lastely, any tips or experience from people here who have upgraded?  I have read the KB article, but be good to see if anyone else at an enterpirse hit any unexpected problems or fine it straight forward?

This is preety straight forward and simple to update however in any doubt feel free to call Support .

cool - so its gone to a Slf

cool - so its gone to a Slf like in Scan Engine?  Thats fine.

What I want to check, does it count the amount of endpoints or simply install the licesne to keep it in date - i.e. does it expire on an anually date or on exceeded endpoints value in the SEPM database - i.e. is it enforced?

There can be quite a few orphan objects in our SEPM at times, that may push it over our entitlement, even though they no logner exist/aren;t 'real endpoints.  Do you understand?

Yes it will be SLF or it can

Yes it will be SLF or it can be your Serial number to update . For objects which are or no longer in Sepm can be removed as discussed earlier now main thing is if the licenses Status shows Overdeployed then the Client will receive Liveudpates for Specific days only and later they wont get updates at all .

Hence its becomes manadate to purchase additional or remove which are no longer to patch up the gap .

It has all the information

It has all the information like number of seats and when it was purchased and when it would expire.

If your over deployed, you would get notified via email. and then you can purchase additional licenses or delete existing as required.

Hello,     The database

Hello,

The database clean-up and licenses are 2 different things. They are not related.

As for the updates, it's Liveupdate that runs and gets the virus definitions updated.
